Skins now trying to trade Coles
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1996404
Looks like they have quite a mess in DC. Redskins would have to take a 9 million hit if he's traded. Good Ol' Danny Boy!!!

I don't see it happening. Its obvious Coles is only giving his signing bonus back if he's allowed to hit the open market. The only way a trade would work is if its like Keyshawn or Glenn's deal ... he's traded to a situation he wants to play for badly enough that he's willing to go there and sign a new contract without finding out what his market value is worth.

Correct there is no way they can trade him unless somehow or another they can avoid that cap hit

I agree as to him not being traded. The Skins are about 4 million under the cap right now and trading him would force alot of restructuring of other deals.

Sources close to Coles told ESPN.com on Monday morning, however, that the Redskins were "trying to back off" their agreement to release the wide receiver and that they were tryng to trade him before making such a drastic move.
|
Pure PR spin. Coles is not movable and they know it. Just trying to save face with their fans. "We tried to trade him, but because of his toe etc etc etc....."

I dont think hell get traded but if he does I think theres a good shot we get him. 1) Hes that speed guy
2) Hes only mid aged
3) most importantly, hes a parcells guy! parcells drafted him and said last year when we played the skins that Coles was one of his best draft picks ever.
Anyone think its possible if he does get traded its to big D?

all's I know is that Coles must be giving a huge chunk of the signing bonus back.
It's the only way it makes sense, if it gets skins some cap back.

OK...so my devious mind is at work..
If I'm the Skins...I'd make an open statement that allows Coles to arrange a trade...
I'd pick a scrub player from the roster...tell Coles he has to arrange a trade where the Redskins get back a first and third rounder for the scrub...if that trade can be arranged, I'd tell Coles, "OK now we'll cut you and you don't have to give back any of your bonus"
Coles signs with his new team...the new team trades the two draft picks for the scrub..and everyone is happy.
Uh, I am feeling like Eddie DeBartolo all of a sudden...
Can the Skins actually do this???

but
the cowboys would never be allowed to do it

The Skins might like to do this, but why would anyone else play ball?
Clearly their only option without a scheme like the one you mention, is to release him, why not wait.
You may say because it cuts out others, but I would rather give up a little more money then draft picks.

Well, the other part of it is, the Skins simply tell Coles, "If you don't arrange the trade, you're not going anywhere. We'd rather sit you for the length of the contract than cut you."
So in that case, no other team would even have a shot at him...

Not even the skins are that stupid, sit a highly productive guy who you are paying millions a year.
I could see them saying we want to keep you, but they will not sit him.

So the choice is...they cut him and even though he gives back SOME of his cap, they take a cap hit regardless...and get nothing for him.
They trade him and take a HUGE hit...
Or they say, "Sorry you're under contract...arrange the deal...and you can go."
I'm just curious from the standpoint of the NFL legality of doing something like this...forget the rest, it's conjecture...
