IRVING -- Less than a year after leading the Dallas Cowboys to their first playoff win in 13 years and receiving a two-year contract extension, Wade Phillips is out as head coach.

After an unfathomable 1-7 start, questions about the team’s passion and a failure to compete anymore on defense, owner Jerry Jones had no choice but to make a historic move by firing a coach in the middle of the season.

Offensive coordinator/assistant head coach Jason Garrett was named the interim coach and will be given an eight-game audition to win the job permanently.
