Default Bloomberg.com: Jerry Jones Says Steinbrenner Would Have Fired Him as Dallas Cowboy GM

Jerry Jones Says Steinbrenner Would Have Fired Him as Dallas Cowboys GM
By Nancy Kercheval - Dec 10, 2010 12:01 AM ET

Jerry Jones said the Dallas Cowboys have had such a bad year that even his friend George Steinbrenner, the late owner of the New York Yankees, would have fired him as general manager.

“Of course he would have,” the Cowboys owner said in an interview to be aired Dec. 12 on CBS Corp.’s “60 Minutes.” “There’s no doubt in my mind he would have.”

Jones last month replaced coach Wade Phillips after a 1-7 start to the season. Under Jason Garrett, who was promoted from offensive coordinator, the team has improved to 4-8. Dallas is still in last place in the four-team National Football Conference East Division and travels to the first-place Philadelphia Eagles (8-4) on Dec. 12.

He won't fire himself.

He needs to hire a GM and then the GM can fire him.

Fired Him? Steinbrenner would have never hired him.

Trent Dilfer: "Tony [Romo] has greatness in him. I think when you talk to other people that really play the quarterback position, there's a few guys that really have incredible greatness in them, and Tony is one of them. I think the issue here is he needs more help from his teammates. I think they are not nearly as talented as people say they are, from 1 to 53. I'm talking about the total roster.”

This year? He wouldn't have lasted anywhere near this long.

You all need to get a life. He brought 3 superbowls to this team AS THE GENERAL MANAGER!!! That's more than we had in our previous history. He hasn't done it lately, true but some of that can be put on the NFL's emphasis on parity and some of it on the job other teams are doing to put talent in place. In the words of Bill Parcells, "The other guys get paid too!". I know that you would like to win the SB every year and so would every other fan and owner and football person in the nfl but just cause you want it don't make it so. All you can truly ask for is someone who has a passion for the team and does everything he can to work towards that dream. Remember, for all the talent that the great NFC has, only the Giants and Cowboys have won it all in the last 20 years. Everyone else has failed.
