Default Solve other needs first?

Just a thought considering we're flooded with cornerback threads this morning, how would you feel if Dallas went cheap at cornerback and solved other pressing needs first? After the Bledsoe signing, it would appear that the team has $15mil left in cap space. Putting about $3-4mil aside for the draft, let's assume there is $10mil of real cap space to spend on free agents this off-season.

If you sign a Fred Smoot to a four year, $30mil contract (with a $12mil signing bonus), you could very well be costing yourself almost half your available space this off-season.

I am of the opinion that Dallas can shore up the 3-4 defensive line by moving Glover to DE and signing Ferguson to play nose tackle. If you do that, then bring in Bell to play linebacker, you have a solid front 7 and might be able to survive with a Mario Edwards, Bobby Taylor or Aaron Beasley opposite Newman on the cornerback spot.

I know that $10mil may seem like alot of space, but my guess is the team can probably only sign 3 impact free agents (and several other lesser ones) without mortgaging the future.

I'm not sure here, but couldn't the $15 million amount actually represent the total we have to spend on free agents alone? It seems like I've seen several articles, such as JFE's yesteraday, indicating we have $15 to spend 'on free agency.' Perhaps the draft amount has already been deducted? I could be way off here, so I'm just throwing it out there...

I was thinking the same thing dale....but that is something for Adam or others to document as the Salary cap is far from a strong suit for me.

You might be right - I was assuming that $15mil number was after the Bledsoe signing but before draft spending. If Adam could chime in with the numbers, I'd appreciate it.

I don't care if it's 15 or 18, I still think it's better to address as many areas as possible, and WR and RCB are not as important as both lines.

If signing a big name corner means we lose out on fixing our pass rush or the right side of the OL what good does it do?

We need a Smoot or a Lucas..thats without a doubt. IM not completly sold on Newman right yet and we proved we have nothing left for cornerback. We need a future saftey and can easily sign another back to help Jones iwth the rnning load. Possibly get an older vet WR for a year or two.

This team is finding gaps all ovehte place and one really suberb WR is not going to help if the qb cant get the ball to him.

If we dont put a bid in for Smoot...its goign to hurt later on. And after Newman im not sure many Cb can enter the NFL and be ready to go.

Default chicken or the egg

...........we missed the boat on B.Berry last year...........we NEED a consistent pass rusher even more that cb...........even the threat of one forces double teams along the line, and or keeping backs/TE's in for protection and out of patterns, which frees up safeties to help on weaker cb's...........

the egg comes 1st

Fill need position where you can and to hell with so called priority, this team has enough needs not to be passing up a quality player because he is not a #1 priority.
