NFL Draft prospect Villanova’s wideout Matt Szczur heads a solid group of small college prospects this year. His rare versatility and playmaking ability rates him as a prospect who can fill a few roles for the pro game. His impact ability in big game situations especially has drawn the eyes of NFL scouts over the past two seasons. I have scouted Matt extensively during that period and view him as an early middle round selection. He is also a highly regarded baseball prospect who faces a major career decision on the two sports next spring.

Last week, the senior wide receiver had a career-high four TDs and threw for another score to lead Villanova (9-4) into the semifinals of the Division I Football Championship with a 42-24 victory at #1 seed Appalachian St (10-3). The defending FCS national champion Wildcats won on the road for the second straight week to reach the semifinals for the 2nd year in a row and third time in program history. Szczur had a hand in five of Villanova’s six TDs (three rushing, one receiving and one passing). He finished with 207 combined yards (104 rushing, 45 receiving and 58 passing).

Matt Szczur was on our Senior Bowl invitation list starting in Sept 2010 and received an official invite this December for the premier All-star event. I will have live updates of Szczure and all the pro prospects at the Senior Bowl and other All-star games this postseason.

In the win over Appalachian St., Szczur for the first time in his career registered touchdowns by way of rushing, receiving and passing in the same game. He did all that in the first half alone as Villanova built a 28-10 lead by halftime before staving off numerous attempts by the Mountaineers to start a rally in the second half. Villanova’s Matt Szczur is 214 all-purpose yards away from reaching the No. 10 spot on the CAA league’s career all-purpose yards list.

Scouting Report Matt Szczur - Villanova
Over the past two seasons I have scouted Villanova in 6 live games and numerous practices Currently, I rank him a Top 100 Prospect off the past two seasons.

Matt Szczur #4 - 5’10” 190 lbs. - Villanova University
Speedy senior receiver/ returner shows the ability to be a legitimate deep threat and playmaker that was instrumental in the Wildcats national title in ’09 season. He is a smaller athlete who is both strong and tough to withstand the physical NFL game. He has the quickness, speed and hands to be a fine playmaker as a receiver, runner and returner. He shows the toughness to go over the middle and get off the line consistently.

He has the quickness into routes with great run after the catch to be a pro playmaker as both a receiver and return specialist. He has been dangerous as both a punt and kickoff returner, displaying big play potential every time he touches the ball.

As he enters the FCS semi-finals this season, he has caught 24 passes with 3 TDs with 54 rushing attempts for 334 yards and over a 6 yard average per carry and 3 TDs. In addition, he has completed 7 of 8 passes with 2 TDs, as one of the most unique Wild Cat weapons in the nation. He has produced these numbers while missing 6 games due to an earlier ankle injury. As a junior, he combined for over 1600 yards rushing and receiving along with 16 TDs.
