"Decision day: Linebacker Dexter Coakley's future will be determined by 3 p.m. today. If he agrees to a restructured contract, he will remain with the Cowboys. If he doesn't, he probably will be cut because he is scheduled to receive a $502,000 roster bonus.
Vice president of player personnel Stephen Jones spoke briefly with Coakley's agent, Pat Dye, on Monday, and they are scheduled to talk again today. Coakley would count $4.7 million against the salary cap."

Okey dokey. Thanks for finding it, because I knew I hadn't seen the deadline part.
Given Jerry's loyalty to players, if they're close, the deadline will probably lapse. I hope they can work something out, though. Dex is homegrown and deserves to retire a Cowboy, without playing for another team.
Thank you to all donated to the Jason Witten Camp drive!

I always really liked his character and work ethic. Can't help but admire a guy who developed his strength by helping his dad lay bricks, and was able to make several Pro Bowls despite not even really being a true 5-10.
But as you said, production-wise as we stand today, his absence will not be felt. It seemed pretty evident Parcells was looking for any and every reason to take him out of the starting lineup, but James was (is) too big a stiff to take advantage of it.

I've always felt the team was limited by Coakley...Jimmy liked small LB's and Jerry, in Jimmy absence became a bit of a caricature of Jimmy.... Shiver was Stepnoski...Bjornson was Novacek...all the small LB's etc...but Jimmy's small LB's were never Coakley's size..

I think he'll stay. Parcells said he had a role with the team if he would take a cut. He has family here. His family is from Mt Pleasant SC and they are all good people and close. I think that will keep him in Dallas. Besides that I'm not sure he will have a sure deal anywhere else. I look for him to resign as a backup/nickel and play one year.
Did you know there are only 5000 Snow Leopards in the wild now and they are confined to Central Asia? However, the effective global population (those likely to reproduce) is less than half that number.
