Star Wes Bunting picks the Cowboy Groceries: Beefy early rounds

Wes Bunting Picks the Cowboys Groceries: Beefy Options in the Early Rounds

Cowboys Nation: Let's dive in now, we have a firm draft position. Dallas picks 9th

Wes Bunting: It's a good spot.

CN: Let's talk about the bowl games. Andrew Luck led Stanford last night and I don't think he did anything to disabuse people of the idea that he should be the top pick.

WB: Oh, they're going nuts.

[Note: Luck announced he will return to Stanford for 2011, so I'm going to skip the rest of the Luck conversation.]

CN: Let's turn to other players in the Stanford backfield and on their offensive line. Owen Marecic got a lot of press last night. The fact that he's a two-way player intrigues a lot of people. Does he have any value as an NFL linebacker or will he make his money strictly as a fullback?

WB: He's stiff in space and he would have a tough time keeping pace with NFL receivers and tight ends. His bread and butter is at fullback. Stanford is such a physical team and he does a lot of nice things. Isolate him inside and allow him to kick out defenders. You wouldn't be playing to his strengths if you took him away from that....
There's no right way to do the wrong thing.

To compete for the playoffs, Dallas has to improve here: Only four sacks against Eli Manning over the past six games!

I've only been reading Wes Bunting in-depth for past couple of months, but my thoughts on some players mentioned jive right in line with his:

I. Nick Fairley is as good as gone before the Cowboys' pick at #9. I've been thinking he's clearly the best DT/DE prospect in the draft for about 2-3 months.

II. Marcel Dareus is not a blue-chip prospect and I want nothing more than to stay away from him relative to where the Cowboys are currently slotted int he first round. As a convienent comparison (although admittedly not dead-on), Dareus is a lot like Marcus Spears. He's a pretty (not incredible) good athlete and run-defender and offers little as a pass rusher. I'm saying all this with no slight to Spears whom I like as a player, but I don't think any of us would take Marcus Spears with the 9th overall pick in a draft.

III. I think when it's all said and done, Prine Amakamura will end up out of the Top 10; I think he likely goes somewhere between 11-15 in the first round.

IV. I think Gabe Carimi is the cream of the crop at RT. However, I disagree with what he seems to be implying that Carimi may fall to the second round. I don't think he'll last that long. I think he's taken somewhere in the 15-25 range.

V. His comments about TCU's Marcus Cannon are spot on. Cannon reminds me so much of Leonard Davis when he was coming out of the U. of Texas. And like Davis, I truly believe a team will find the most success for Cannon at OG.

Thanks for your comments here, Realtick...this time of year is when you annually shine. You are definitely an asset to have around come the start of collegiate All Star games onward...

Thanks CC, it's always been one of my favorite times of the year. I used to have the same interest with the NBA draft, but once they started allowing high school kids to enter the college game got watered down and less interesting to watch.

We could only pray we're so lucky that Cam Jordan is sitting there at 9. Id take him over just about any player in the draft other than Peterson and Bowers, and I might take him over Peterson just because I think cornerbacks are overrated in today's NFL. Jordan can play just about every position and tech on the line, and did at Cal.

How anyone could want to take a mediocre right tackle over someone like that is beyond me. Find a mediocre right tackle in free agency.

Despite labeling myself a "realist", no one understands my pain or appreciates my special truth. Stupid world.

Actually its hard to find any GOOD tackle in FA that will not cost a mint, even RT.

It's hard when you're not very good at evaluating offensive linemen.

Flozell has pretty much been dominant for the Steelers, ask any Steelers fan, and they got him for nothing.

Flo is a solid RT option and would have been for us if he wanted to make RT money. Don't know that we mis-evaluated him so much as we had to pay him beyond what he was worth so parted ways with him.

Then again we did start Colombo all those games and an eskimo minus access to a tv could evaluate him as can't play.

We need at least 1 FA OL but also at least 1 high draft pick. How many years are we going to ignore the spot? We have outstanding player sin our defensive front 7 including probably the best player in football on that side of the ball. On the OL we have older, slow, poop and 1 mediocre young starter.
But I still don't know what any team saw Thursday night that would have made them comfortable with waiting a round or two for the offensive lineman they wanted. ---Todd McShay
We just converted half our LB to DL. We have a 30m starting DL, it better be pretty friggin good.

As we have debated in other threads...I do not really like the idea of taking a 3-4 DE in the first round with our current pick.

However, if we did wind up taking a guy, he would be the one I like the best.

Now I would not take him over Peterson...but of the Dlinemen there, he would be the best IMO.

Cam Jordan for me over everyone except Fairley and Petersen. No tackles are worth that spot and we can probably get a good RT/G in the early 2nd. Safety in the 3rd or trade up to get one.

I'm a CAL homer and I don't get the Jordan love.

I like the guy a lot. Great athlete. Very versatile. Great bloodlines and all that.

3-5 sack guys don't really do anything for me at 9.

In a trade getting another two then I have no problem taking a DE, but he have way too many holes to fill other than that.

It's good to see someone else that doesn't think Carimi is a 1st rounder. I think I'm the only one on this board that feels that way.
