Default Ferguson tidbit with regards to negotiations with Jets

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/02/sp...ll/02jets.html

"Among the three Jets starters who were scheduled to enter the free-agent market, the team appeared to be in the best position to re-sign defensive tackle Jason Ferguson.

The Jets have been in intense negotiations with Ferguson in the past few weeks, but Ferguson had not reached an agreement with the Jets late yesterday and appeared ready to test the free-agent market.

Ferguson, 30, is coming off perhaps the best season of his eight-year career and is expected to receive considerable interest as a free agent. One suitor could be Dallas Cowboys Coach Bill Parcells, who, while with the Jets, drafted Ferguson in 1997.

The team's remaining starters whose contracts are expiring - tight end Anthony Becht and right tackle Kareem McKenzie - are not expected to return. After the season, Becht complained about his role in the offense; he had a career-low 13 catches.

McKenzie and the Jets were far apart on the terms of a new contract."

All of the rumors thus far has been focused on the defense and undestandably so, but I haven't heard many names mentioned in the media of OL who the Cowboys may pursue. Do you think they want to get the DT/NG position and corner filled first and then they will go hard after a RT? I wonder if a guy like McKenzie would be a target of the Cowboys or if he will too expensive. I know they also need a WR, but if I had to guess, I think they will look to address that position in the draft with one of their first three picks.

Even without fergy, I would be happy (er?) with Pat Williams. Kinda Sam Adams - like...just eats blockers.

I agree on receiver. Perhaps we sign a lower-priced guy, maybe even a Troy Brown type, but if we try to make a dent at receiver it'll be in the draft. Guys like Plaxico Burress are simply not going to be on our radar, and other than he and Mason, the free agent crop isn't all that enticing.

If Coles would have been released, I think we'd have been all over him like rat piss on cotton, as Troy Hambrick would say. But with him not on the market, I don't see that being a position central to our free-agent priorities.

Honestly though, Dale, who do you like in the draft? Mike Williams is the best playmaker, but he seems to be a carbon copy of Keyshawn coming out of the same school.....not that Keyshawn was bad, but I don't need another one.

Braylon Edwards is from Michigan, who just has a poor track record with WRs - the pro system allows their WR to own college DBs.

The OU guy is a number 2 at best.

For my money, I would rather get a stop-gap player (Housmanzedah?) and wait another year. I just don't see much opportunity to match our need.

Yeah, I pretty much agree. I guess that's why I listed Troy Brown. I could see us signing a guy like that, who won't command much cap space or a long-term deal, with the intentions of allowing him to compete for the third spot along with possibly nabbing a guy in the draft. But if it turns out we're unable to draft a guy, the 'Boys will just say so be it.

I think this season is the least likely of any that we'll reach on a receiver. If Williams falls, I could see interest despite the downside you referenced. I just think the top guys will be long gone when we draft.

I like the T.J. Houshblahblahzedah reference, but can see him, with his youth, getting a solid contract from some team to be their starting receiver.

This is the time I mention my feelings on Crayton. I would be a very happy person if he can step into a number 3 role. Saw him in TC, watched him all season, and just really like what he brings to the table.

The odds are against me on this, but I see Randle El written on this fella.

To be honest, I often forget about Crayton. He does have all the tools, I think the only question will be if he's able to develop all the intraquacies of the position to really solidify himself there. So many times we just look at size, speed and hands, but a great deal of a receivers' ability to create separation goes beyond that -- be it from studying corners' tendencies and how to best beat them off the line, initial burst, etc.

I think Parcells looks at that third receiving position and knows he'd like a better, more immediately proven player. Then he looks at his front seven, followed by a quick glance at the right side of the offensive line, along with spotting two holes in the secondary out of the corner of his eye and realizes it probably can't be addressed this offseason.

Just can't get an OT, OG, DT, DE, OLB, CB, FS, backup RB...and a top-notch 3rd receiver all in one offseason.

If we want a quick fix, we could always sign a heady guy like Troy Brown, or even a speedy guy like Galloway if we feel we just must get more speed at receiver. With the going rate for Galloway now only being roughly $1 million, he's not nearly as overpaid lol.

RT, RG, DT, OLB (and ILB if 3-4), FS and CB are what we ought to worry about more than anything.

I can survive on minimal change at WR another year.....with Glenn coming back, Key coming back, Morgan, Crayton, Copper, or another 3rd/4th tier WR might step up. I can then assess the market next offseason. WR needs upgrading, but I can use duct tape another season if necessary.

OMG, the spectre of Joey Galloway rising again over Dallas. The horror, the horror. If we get a WR I will still cross my fingers and hope Mike Williams drops to us. Especially if he drops to our second first rounder. Where is the best place to spread rumours in NY anyway.
