Ferguson played in the 4-3 with the Jets.
His signing doesn't necessarily mean we are going to the 3-4 full time
|
Exactly, we may split with 4/3 3/4 we need some lb's now.

Jets' nose tackle Ferguson going to Cowboys

When the clock struck midnight, Jets unrestricted free agent nose tackle Jason Ferguson turned into a Cowboy.
Ferguson, who anchored the Jets run defense last season, rebuffed the Jets' offer and will sign with the Cowboys and former Jets coach Bill Parcells, someone with knowledge of the situation said early this morning.
Terms of the contract were unavailable.
The move left the Jets, who felt they were close to a deal with Ferguson, scrambling to find a replacement. They're eyeing Bills free agent defensive tackle Pat Williams, trying to get him to fly to New York today. Williams is believed to have several bidders, including one from the Vikings.
[View Full Quote]Ferguson, 30, will be reunited with Parcells, who drafted him in the seventh round out of Georgia in 1997. He played three seasons under Parcells and one season with while while Parcells was in the Jets' front office.
The nine--year pro is coming off a career season in which he had 59 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks. He was coveted because of his ability to play in a 3-4 alignment, a scheme the Cowboys will employ this season.__________________

It's in print so it MUST be true.
What defense was Ferguson playing in NY?
So you "predicting" a full time 3-4? Because nobody said we won't USE some 3-4.

I'm waiting for the rest of that statement, the part that goes "...as their base defense." And also the part where it says, "Cowboys coach Bill Parcells has confirmed this move to the 3-4 alignment". Until then, it's just speculation on EVERYONE'S part. They toyed with the 3-4 some last year, and I expect them to do the same this year. Does that mean that they're making a full transition to using as the BASE defense? Nope. Does it mean they aren't? Nope. It's all conjecture until something definitive comes out of Valley Ranch and that probably won't happen until after the draft.

I would love to go both. I think we could be dominate if we use both and completely throw off the other offense.

Parcell's is big on rotating his lineman. He always wants depth and getting rid of Glover wouldn't make much sense. Today we have Glover, Fergusen and Ellis on our line. That is solid. Obviously we need another DE. I think we will run a 4-3 and 3-4, but neither exclusively.

Glover is our Dewayne Robertson
I think the Jets are our model and not the Pats. The Jets ran a hybrid 4-3/3-4 with Abraham moving up and down. They also were much more aggressive than we were. We have alot of the same components. I believe our secondary is better however. The key to their defense was Abraham, Ferguson, and communication. Merriman, Ware, Tuck could all fit the Abraham role. Its up to Zimmer to be more aggressive and make the communication work. We also need a heady veteran at safety.

If someone is willing to make a nice offer for Glover of course he could be moved. If your going to make a trade it is better to do so with a guy that has talent where you would be able to get something in return of high value. Having said that I do like Glover and hope he returns next year but the Walker trade proved one thing to me and that is any player can be traded if the price is right.

The only DE we have that I like at all is Coleman, but he would be my last choice to play DE in the upcoming season. So even though we don't have the players to go 3-4, when you think about it we don't really have a DE that would be any good in the 4-3 so I guess we are in a bit of a tough spot.

i think you might have it backwards. there is a dearth of 3-4 ends available. in the draft only spears comes to mind. you need big ends in the 3-4. in 4-3 size is less important in an end.

Even when we are in a 4-3, Glover will see a lot of action. He'll probably see spot duty at end and word is that Parcells thinks Glover can play some NT on certain passing situations.
He already sees constant double teaming with the C and G anyway, he could play a few passing downs at NT.

I don't want to trade away a great player like Glover either, but IF we go to the 3-4 full time then we won't have a use for him and why keep a player we have no need for?

Oufff you will have some answers with this ' Zimmer to be more aggressive'.
You will wake up HH and Wolverine.

I want the 4-3.. we FINALLY have 3 quality linemen!
Greg Ellis
La'Roi Glover
Ferguson
We can add someone like Spears ,maybe Merriman(sp?), there's tons of DE's in this draft.. we have Bradie James at OLB, Nguyen at MLB.. we need a OLB, and a FS..
if we switch to the 3-4, we have another hole.. right now, on defense, we need..
FS, OLB, DE.. and that's it. It's easier to find 4-3 people than it is 3-4

Base 3-4 Defense
With some 4-3 looks, no doubt.
Now we have a NT that can play both!

The signing of Ferguson and the re-signing of Leo Carson suggest we are going to have the 4-3 as our base defense next year as both are better 4-3 DTs than NTs (ditto for Glover).
Now Ferguson could probably do the job for a 3-4 NT for a few snaps of a game but I wouldn't want to leave him out there all-day doing that.
