Star BTB: East-West Shrine Game 2011: Dallas Cowboys Talk To A Few Players

East-West Shrine Game 2011: Dallas Cowboys Talk To A Few Players
by Dave Halprin on Jan 21, 2011 9:49 AM EST

The first of the college all-star games is coming up this Saturday. The East-West Shrine Game will be played at 4 PM EST tomorrow. The coach for the West Team? None other than our ex-coach, Wade Phillips. On the other side of the ball, coaching the East, is another guy with Cowboys connections, Dan Reeves.

One of SB Nation's NFL sites, Big Cat Country (covering the Jaguars), has writers attending the practices this week for the game. They have various reports on practices, but this was funny.

First of all, Wade Phillips ran special teams practice for about a half hour on Tuesday afternoon, which was rather obnoxious. You could see most of the NFL scouts, etc. with an annoyed look on their face, especially because the West's kicker, Dan Bailey of Oklahoma State, kept booting the kickoff out of the endzone.

Oh that Wade!...
There's no right way to do the wrong thing.

To compete for the playoffs, Dallas has to improve here: Only four sacks against Eli Manning over the past six games!

Alex Green is an interesting character, possibly Marion's replacement.
We need wins, and that's all we need. I don't give a damn about anyone on this roster over wins. I'd trade Ware, Lee and Dez if it meant more wins.

Exactly. I've been wanting us to draft a 230+ power back for a couple of years now for that very reason.

Although I have to say that in the few youtube clips of Green, he's just running through empty space on draw plays on most of the runs I saw. Not sure how much of a power back he really is, or if he's just big.

Draft Scout Alex Green News
12/24/10 - PLAYERS TO WATCH: Hawaii ranks 106th in the nation with 109.1 rushing yards per game. The numbers don't do the run game justice, though. The Warriors don't run often, but they have been potent on the ground. Alex Green is the Warriors' first 1,000-yard rusher in the run-and-shoot era. He enters the postseason with four 100-yard games in the past six contests and a season total of 17 rushing touchdowns. Tulsa has been solid against the run this year. - The Sports Xchange

Not that big for his size, actually bigger on top than on bottom, frame still has room to grow. Not super fast, but has another gear, north south guy with one cut ability. And Hawaii's backs usually have nice averages because they run out of the spread/run and shoot formation. But Green is a legit 1,000 yard rusher. And all of Hawaii's backs can pass protect and catch.

But he doesn't have the lead blocking ability of say, Mauia Regan, now playing in Miami.

Speaking of, the game just kicked off... We going to have a game thread? Anyone watching?

And geez... Green just fumbled first play of the game.

And one more thing before I'm done for a while... Anyone know if Wes is the OC for the West today? It almost looked like him on the sideline, and of course with Wade coaching it would make some sense. Just got a short look, so I could be totally off. But maybe some good inside info on some late-round guys if so.
