South Park. Not even a contest.
Simpsons should be contending with shows like Spongebob, or other children shows.
Simpsons can't even beat out Futurama.

South Park
This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

South Park!
Simpsons hasn't been funny in years.
Record: 2-3 as of 10/15/2012 | Prediction: 7-9 | Final: 8-8 with a Romo choke

easy to traverse a path previously forged, so The Simpsons would get my nod fore that reason alone, but I have to give South Park credit for the way in which they can really push the envelope.
they both have suffered from their early work though

This isn't a fair fight. One show peaked over 10 years ago and hasn't been funny for a very long time. The other is just as relevant and funny now as it's ever been.
South Park in an embarrassing landslide.
