Default South Carolina's Alshon Jeffery contend for the Heisman Trophy?

Receivers who could contend for Heisman
June, 6, 2011 Jun 611:38AM ETEmail Print Comments3 By Ben LernerOnly two wide receivers have won the Heisman Trophy (1987 Tim Brown, 1991 Desmond Howard). In 2011, there are three who could emerge as contenders.

Alshon Jeffery, South Carolina
The 6-foot-4-inch junior burst on to the national scene last season with 1,517 receiving yards. More impressive was the fact that he dropped just one pass.

In 2010, Jeffery had 88 receptions and 61 of them gained at least 10 yards. There have been only five instances over the past five seasons when a receiver had at least 70 receptions and gained 10 yards or more at a higher rate. Compare that to former Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green, the fourth pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. He gained 10 yards or more on just 56 percent of his receptions last season.

he may compete but he'll likely be the 2nd WR on the list behind Blackmon....Blackmon is going to get the highlights and numbers to keep Alshon behind him because Ok St features Blackmon and runs a pass-heavy offense that should be better next year, unless the O-Coordinator leaving has a bigger impact than expected. Alshon has the advantage of playing in the SEC where, if he takes over several big games, he could win it. However, he has the disadvantage of playing at SC who will be fortunate in most years to finish in the top 4 of the SEC.
Blackmon probably should've gotten more heisman love last year as he was putting up video game-like #s but he got no hype before the preseason because no one expected him to emerge like he did. This year should be different.
Still left to accomplish:
sign OT Winston or G Moore
