Star DC.com: Huge Salary Dump May Not Be Needed

Huge Salary Dump May Not Be Needed

...According to some reports, the Cowboys have roughly $139 million currently on the books for this year, meaning they will have to trim some contracts in order to get under the cap. But Friday, the NFL.com report said certain credits and exceptions, the cap could "feel" more like $130 million, about $10 million north of most recent projections.

What this means for the Cowboys is that the team will have more flexibility in free agency, and may not have to sacrifice an extra veteran or two just to get under the cap and make room for new additions. By releasing just two or three veterans, probably including Marc Colombo and Marion Barber, and renegotiating another deal or two, the Cowboys could free up sufficient space to focus on other crucial areas of need, like re-signing Doug Free, Stephen Bowen or Gerald Sensabaugh.

Remember, because of the rookie wage scale, the "rookie cap," will be cut roughly in half this year, creating extra room...

To compete for the playoffs, Dallas has to improve here: Only four sacks against Eli Manning over the past six games!

Using generalized principal substitution...insert Huff, Weddle, etc.

But Sensabaugh might additionally give something of a Dallas discount in the 3 day buffer to open free agency.

Cleansing The Mind
Spagnola: Of Caps, Corners, Crawling, Curtains And CBA

....Please consider the last time the NFL had a salary cap, that being in 2009 and prior to the 2010 uncapped season, the cap hit at $128 million. So we are talking maybe $8 million less two years later, knowing the Cowboys uncapped season expenditures exceeded $150 million.

Now some of that was planned, anticipating dropping funds in an uncapped year. But the point is, the Cowboys will be doing some belt tightening in the next couple of weeks if indeed the cap is no more than $120 million. They still must re-sign Doug Free, a couple of their unrestricted defensive ends, at least one safety (free or strong), a left guard and ... and ... first-round draft choice Tyron Smith, the ninth overall pick.

So better wake up and cease the free-agent pie-in-the-sky dreaming.

Also, word to the wise to guys entering no more than the final two years of their contracts:

Better show up in shape and ready to go. No need to give management the slightest excuse to eat your prorated signing bonus to save on your base salary. There won't be time to wait for stragglers.

I have a feeling Jerry has learned about paying mediocre safeties like Sensabaugh (see Ken Hamlin). Eric Weddle or Michael Huff should be targets. They are PROVEN, quality starters who have playmaking skills also.

Haha thank you brother...Rob Ryan should have full control with who he wants to bring in for the defense. Since there was essentially no offseason, I'm assuming Ryan would want to bring in players who already knows his scheme. If we go for Weddle over Huff, I hope we target Abram Elam, who knows Rob's scheme from Cleveland.

Man, now THAT just makes too much sense on top of this lockout atmosphere.

sadly, i don't think he was the weakest link on the D. Frankly, I'm okay with bringing him back IF we bring in a solid FS and possibly upgrade at one of the CB positions, although that'd take a ton of cash to do all three. Oh well, guess it isn't my money anyway.
Still left to accomplish:
sign OT Winston or G Moore
