Your Dallas Cowboys Stories
oh man, I've had one of the most blessed childhoods ever, aside from having a great family
I mean sports-related
in 1992 I was 9 years old when I first started watching sports. I remember, I was on the couch with my dad and the first person I laid eyes on was Emmitt Smith, the "E. Smith" on the back of his jersey, the sunlight from the Hole shining on him in the huddle
this was a few games into the 1992 super bowl season
after that game and watchin him run like that, I was hooked for life.
I'm not sure if this is normal for an 8 year old but man, I followed the Cowboys like crazy! If I couldn't watch a game because I had to go somewhere with my mom, I was making my mom put the game on the car radio..
and I remember getting PISSED!!! that one night we lost to the Redskins in that 13-3 season! and PISSED that we lost to the Rams and Cleveland Gary
I remember calling my dad after the championship win against the 49ers
I remember my dad and I going CRAZY during the Super Bowl where TD after TD was pourin down on the Bills and I remember his huge smile
man, at 20 lookin back, those were the days, and hopefully, those will be the days again

The first three years I was a Cowboys fan they were in and lost 3 straight NFC CHamiponship games, to the Eagles, 9ers and Redskins respectivly. Then Dallas had what about 3 more seasons with a winning record and the wheels fall off. A huge fan as a kid of Tony Dorsett loved him idolized him, wished I could meet him. Was ticked at Walker for taking his spot, didn't like Herschel for a while because of that. As a Cowboy fan of the 80's we went from 1986 to 1990 without a winning record. Then came the 11-5 season in 1991 with a Win in the wild card over the Bears and a loss to the lions the next week. Then started the run of 3 superbowls in 4 years and some really happy times being a Cowboys fan. Up until 1992 I had a been a Cowboys fan for 12 years and never saw them play in a superbowl, I was a fan almost my entire life without seeing my team in the big show. I tell you what that game on January 31 1993, at that point in my life it was the happiest day ever...
COWBOYS FREAKING RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're just a youngin'!
At age 13 I remember sitting in front of the TV in our living room with my brother and watching a 27-21 lead over the 49 whiners in the NFC Championship in 1982 slip before our very eyes. We BOTH cried like babies after that game. I immediately hated the 49ers after that game and thought it was absolute poetic justice that Alvin Harper's 70-yard catch and run against the 49 whiners sealed our victory over them in the '93 game.

I thought I was posting at this board: http://www.acne.org/messageboard/
I was wondering what the heck you all were all talking about.
Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go pop some zits.

I was seven. I cried myself and remember yelling he was out of bounds after "the Catch." That's my earliest Cowboy memory.
Is there any reward for good other than good?

My dad went to college with Al Ward, who was the VP of the Cowboys I think, he went on the GM the Jets, and so we would go up once a year to watch a game and stay in the same Dallas hotel as the Cowboys and get to see them do their walk thru at the Stadium. I remember one year sitting in the hotel restaurant eating breakfast and Dave Manders came and sat on one side of me and Walt Garrison on the other, I was in heaven. I think I got Larry Cole's autograph 3 times that year, I would ask anyone over 6' for an autograph. One year I had a friend with me, I think we were about 10 and it was when we got Billy Truax as a TE, my friend as we were down on the turf during the walk thru yells out "HEY TRUAX" and this 6'5" dude comes over staring at my friend, but he was very nice. There are others but those stand out at the moment.

Yep, I am old too...(Although 2 DAYS younger then Micheal Jordan...Hint hint)
My first Cowboy memory was watching them lose to the Colts in our first Super Bowl...I was hooked though, seeing that "Star" and as a kid, justing thinking it was cool to be a Cowboy...(The real kind)
But as I started playing in school, I first wanted to run like Calvin Hill, then Tony Dorsett was IT!
I lived near Notre Dame but across the line in Michigan at the time but hated them and LOVED how Tony ALWAYS tore them UP!
I can still remember I was outside mowing the grass, when my Mom comes out & tells me the Cowboys had just drafted Tony Dorsett! (She knew how HUGE of a Cowboys fan I am) I knew right then, HE was what we had been lacking to get us over the top to WIN Super Bowls again...
I wore his number in HS and although I didn't have that "2nd gear" top speed, I was know for having the "moves" and quickness that made it very hard for players to tackle me (On D I loved Cliff Harris and how he tried to take heads OFF!)
Then in 1985-86, even though our better years were fading (For that era) I got to meet & talk to Tony for around an hour while he was in Honolulu at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii & I was living there...
Nice guy, I tried to help him find a Trans Am for him to rent while he was there...He instantly found out I knew well of his career from his Pitt days & how he killed the Irish, so he was pretty open. We talked of the then Gary Hogeboom vs Danny White issues & more...
I also was given DT Jimmy Jones's playing glove after the Cowboys killed the Colts here in Indy after then won a Super Bowl (Or was that the year he scored the TD in the Super Bowl?) I forget...
But my recent meeting & shaking Jerry Jones hand was also a HUGE thrill as well for a HARD core Cowboys FAN!

I will keep mine short. I was at the thanksgiving day game vs Miami when Leon Lett gave the win to Miami after blocking the FG. I have never heard Texas Stadium so quiet in my life like when the ref. was explaining what the rules where in that situation.

I grew up in a Cowboys home. My first memory that I can remember of an actual Cowboys game was the game with Walker running all over the Pats and winning the game in overtime.
I told my sad story in another thread of my dad being a buddy of Staubach's in the Navy and making sure I was a Cowboys fan only to turn on the team in '89 and not hates them.
Here is some of my orginal post...
It reminds me of my childhood. I was born in '79 and my dad made sure my first words were "Roger Staubach." Sadly, he is no longer a Cowboys fan and even kinda rips on me for being one. Although, with Parcells back, I noticed he would call me about alot of the games and he was off the couch faster than I was when Crayton killed the skins in Dec.
My dad served in the Navy with Staubach and when he retired and Jones fired Landry, a piece of my dad died inside.
It really is. He will even ask me why I am such a rabid cowboys fan and I always tell him it was because of him. I was born in El Paso, Texas and my mom told me that during my delivery, my dad was talking the doc's ear off about how Dallas were going to do in the playoffs and whatnot.
He hated the 90's Cowboys with a passion because of his hate for Jerry Jones and how he treated Landry. This last christmas, I showed him the Cowboys/skins game from '79 on DVD and he was just in awe. I don't think he had seen Roger play since '79 and he just stared at the screen in silence for a long time and then started talking about their days in the Navy.
