Default Texas coach Brown coy on QB battle

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Texas coach Mack Brown is being coy about his quarterbacks.
The Longhorns report Thursday for the 2011 season with last year's starter, Garrett Gilbert, fighting for his job. He threw 17 interceptions as Texas fell to 5-7 in 2010, its first losing season in 13 years.
Gilbert now is trying to fend off challenges from sophomore Case McCoy, the younger brother of former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, and freshmen Connor Wood and David Ash.
Brown gave little hint Wednesday of who he expected to emerge as the starter for the Sept. 3 opener at home against Rice.
"We do think we're in a real healthy spot because we do have four quarterbacks who have a chance," Brown said Wednesday at the Austin Sports Commission Texas Gridiron Kickoff luncheon.
"We've got to make it work. ... It's about who is going to win," Brown said. "I'm not worried about it. I'm excited about it."

Also reported David Ash could be used as a situational punting. Meaning the staff would have to decide whether Ash would punt often enough-or possibly play some at QB-to make it worthwhile for him not to take a redshirt season.

interesting.

I'm looking forward to seeing who comes out on top in the QB race. I know from going to a couple games last year that the fan favorite is McCoy for obvious reasons. Me I just want the best man to step forward. As far as McCoy goes being the younger brother of a guy who holds many Texas records that is a lot of pressure that he will be under.

I would be surprised to see anyone but Gilbert. I like Mack but he makes those backdoor deals with the kids parents (Simms over Applewhite). I want to trust the coaching staff to make the best decission for the team moving forward. However, the backdoor dealing remains in the back of my mind.

Given the job Mack has done I give him full trust.

QB is not the issue. The O-line is the problem and it probably will be again this year. Until you improve the blocking up front, it is not going to make much of difference who the QB is.

I agree but I also think Gilbert tended to hold the ball too long and seemed very indecisive of where he was throwing too. I know 2 of the games I went to the passes he would make happened well after the WR came out of his break. Those passes need to be gone before the WR makes the break.

I like him and understand that was his 1st season as a starter hopefully he improves. Thus far in the inter squad game McCoy was reported to have done a better job.
