good point! If the guy is healthy.. our D line would be sick... I must say though.. I'm really excited @ the prospect of 2 top twenty picks and not trading down.. I still think we're one big play YOUNG wr away from really having some fun on offense..

I think this is a terrible deal for us. Parcells has again miscalculated where this team is just like he did last year. The results will not be so disastrous this year but will be felt when we peak at 9-7 and 8-8 before beginning our descent trapped by unfriendly contracts given to solid vets who are about to become injured and/or see a dramatic decline in their level of play.

It will end up taking a couple of years for the next HC to undo this mess by cutting the nonproductive fat cats from the roster.

My only hope is that BP continues to find some good young talent. My fear is that even if he does find them, we won't be able to re-sign them ala Redskins because we are too cap-strapped.

I guess we'll see how it all plays out in the end. Nothing to do but hope for the best.

we could fill the DE need in the draft, there are a handful of first round DEs, still have our second round pick AND still have our starting MLB.
but Howard is a double digit sack RDE...Nguyen isnt an impact MLB

I gotta admit.

I'd give Dat straight up.
or
I might give a second round pick straight up.
But both seems a bit much.
Am I alone here?

I am really going to miss the anticipation of one of those draft picks.

I agree - this is too much to give up for Howard.

Now if he were a true FA and we wanted to give him $17M, I would think twice about it. But to give up a starter and a 2nd rounder too? It just seems like too much to give up for a rebuilding team with a weak roster.

doesn't make sense to fill one need at the expense of the other.

we still need a FS, OLB, MLB, WR, Oline Depth, Backup RB and we've only got 2 picks on the first day.
You can always trade out of the 20 spot for more picks. So many options.

How long hav we looked for a DE? 10 years. Now we can get one of the best and STILL have 2 first round picks.

NO BRAINER.

There is no formula for success except an unconditional acceptance of life and what it brings.

You can put money down in Vegas that if we trade Dat we are trading down not only once but twice to acquire more picks. The only problem is if they want to trade out of 11 their might not be many takers since this draft has alot of the same talent.(meaning there arent many big time players in the top 20 that stand out)

I think they are miscalculating again. I like Parcells, but I have to question the approach of going for broke in 2005. The Cowboys need players everywhere and now they are giving up the #42 pick in the draft and a defensive starter for an above average de whose hurt quite a bit?

they had a very nice start to free agency, but now is the time to focus on the draft - which is the most important way to build a team. How do you build with only 2 picks in the first 3 rounds? I'm not sure there will be alot of teams that want to trade on draft day either, so trading down from either #11 or #20 won't be as easy as they think. Talent seems to be very even in this draft.

Agreed.

Dat, though he's a tough little bastid, isn't something that's tough to replace. He's smallish and does little to impact the course of a game. Dat Nguyen is a solid middle backer who will do pretty well on his side of the L.O.S.

I don't really like giving a two for Howard, but that's a reasonable deal for a 28 year-old pass rusher of this quality. But that's just me. I rarely like getting off first-day selections.

Then I weigh that against what bolstering the defensive front means, and yeah, I'd prolly have to do that.

howard-double digit sacks, one of the best.please he's had double digit sacks twice in his career.once his rookie year and his contract year.he is far fronm one of the best.he's a good solid de,much like ellis who actually has more sacks in the last 4 years than howard.a 2nd,dat,and a ton of money is too much.maybe a next years 2nd straight up,or dat straight up.remember you gotta sign this guy and he wants 17 mil.don't forget we have to extend tnew, witten, and roy real soon.as uch as i wanted howard as a f.a, when you start trading players and picks you get into cap trouble real fast.i think i can find a guy in the draft to get 8 sacks a year which is howards average.if not he will be free next year if not traded, they won't keep payimg him franchise money as deep as they are at de.
