Howard Deal Nearing Conclusion?
By Derrick Crosby
Date: Mar 14, 2005
How close are the Cowboys to picking up Saints defensive end Darren Howard?
As of late Monday evening, the Dallas Cowboys and the New Orleans Saints are still holding discussions regarding defensive end Darren Howard.
As reported yesterday on RanchReport.com, the Saints obviously want as much as they can get for Howard. In an ideal world, New Orleans wants one of the Cowboys' two first round picks.
So far, the Cowboys are not willing to budge.
Dallas is now offering their second round pick, and possibly another future pick, or another player for Howard.
Sources indicate that the Cowboys and Howard are "on the same page" when it comes to signing the defensive end to a long term deal, but that can only happen after a trade is agreed upon between the two teams.
Consequently, the hang up obviously rests with the compensation the Saints would receive in such a move.
RanchReport.com does not have any new information on what round draft pick the Cowboys would be willing to part with in the future. However, it stands to reason that Jerry Jones would be unwilling to part with next year's first round draft pick.
Sources maintain that the Cowboys are anxious to make this deal happen, and that there still remains a better than average chance that the deal will eventually go through.
If the Cowboys are able to hold on to both of their first round picks, it is believed that they will try and trade down from the No. 20 overall selection to acquire more picks. Consequently, Dallas could pick up a new second round pick after trading away their current second round selection.

Which is what they probably will do. That Julius trade looks better and better. Now if he can stay healthy, the OL does a good job and we can pass look out 1500+.
Did you know there are only 5000 Snow Leopards in the wild now and they are confined to Central Asia? However, the effective global population (those likely to reproduce) is less than half that number.

If we give up more than a 2nd rd pick, I won't like this trade at all. Giving up on pick, but several high picks? We need to build our young core players.

Do you think you can draft a player as good as Howard in the second. Sure you might do better. Chances are you will not hit the flush though. They aren't going to give up much more than that. If they throw in a 5 to 7 pick that's ok although I'd prefer that be next year when we probably draft lower. But not much difference. Two high picks I'd agree with you based on the future of the team although we'd likely be better off for the next year or two even then.
You're better off draft choice wise with a pro bowl player for a second round pick.
It's the money that's the issue. They want to get as much for as litle as they can and waiting is the best way. They also need to leave room for one more player and wiggling room the rest of the year. JMO.

I'm not worried about the contract. Jerry and Stephen have been down the road of cap hell before and I seriously doubt they are headed that way again. Of the big three in Dallas, Stephen I trust when it comes to the cap.
I also don't mind giving up our second for Howard. As you said, it will be very unlikely that lightning strikes twice on our second round pick (Julius being the first time). I just find it to be overkill when you are talking something like this years 2nd round pick and next years 3rd round pick. We most likely will not get a super-star with that 3rd round pick, but there is a good chance we get a starter out of it, and with these contracts that we are signing lately, were going to need some cheap starters in the near future.

I agree for the most part...first off we should take Howard and give our 2nd but lighting can strike twice with a lighting rod like Parcels, Julius Jones was Bills pick, he may have another player nailed at #43 like Shaun Cody or Crowder could fall...I still like the trade, hopefully Dallas will trade down from #20 unless Troy Williamson or Dan Cody is available.
