Draft hopes, fears
...IF all three top RB's And both top QB's and two CB's (Pac Man and either Rogers or Rolle) get taken in the top 10, THEN just one team has to fall in love with a guy like Merriman or Cody or Williamson or Spears or Barron and one of the following three guys will be there at 11: Johnson, Edwards or Williams. If any of those three is there, IMO you pull the trigger. The question becomes: what if NONE of those three do drop to 11? I would seriously explore a trade down as far as 19 if that happens, because IMO ONE of the following will slip to 19: Dan Cody, Erasmus James, Shawne Merriman, Troy Williamson or Jamal Brown and I would be satisfied with any of these as a value choice and bank the pick or picks the move down generates.
I do want a WR in the first round. I would be thrilled with Williams or Edwards, happy with Williamson or Clayton, satisfied with White. The only WR's I would take at 11 would be Edwards or Williams. But I think we need a WR, and the dropoff after these 5 is severe, to the point of not worth doing, unless you wanted to take a flier on a Mathis in rd. 2 which I really don't.
Merriman scares the h#ll out of me. I'm not saying he'll be a bust but prior to the combine he was barely a first rounder. Now he's knocking on the door of the top 10? I dunno...Give me Johnson and I'd feel a whole lot more comfortable.
The only safety I really like is Josh Bullocks because he's a true cover FS and a ball hawk and he'll probably go earlier than he should because of a shortage of decent secondary guys in the league. You might need to take him at 42 if you want him but personally I'd take a chance and move down 10-12 spots and see if i could pick up a third. But depending on what we do in round 1 my first hope would be a Burnett, a Tuck or a Hawthorne slips to 42 and then you go with what you have at safety. Personally I think Pete Hunter should be given every chance to be the starter there whether it's his first choice or not to move from corner. He's got the size and speed to be very good.
I'm not that concerned about having a Torrin Tucker at RT, I think he'll be ok. The only tackle prospect that really intrigues me is Jamal Brown, but I'd rather have the WR at 20.

I'm worried we'll have another draft like the ones from 97-02. Lots of stars from those drafts. Stars from getting hit in the head with a baseball bat for making those picks.

I can see a scenario where the Boys take Spears at #11 as they really showed their interest at the Senoir Bowl. If Mark Clayton was available at #20, I don't see how they could pass him by. He's perhaps the most ready-for-the-pros wideout in this draft and would represent great value at #20. If, somehow, a trade down for another pick could be had at #11, I would hope that a #2 pick could be obtianed to pick up another LB and a FS, even in round 3. It is also very possible that a decent FS could be found as late as round 6, prvided we get a comp pick. The key would be to get defensive help in round one and to get a WR with our other #1 and another pick in round 2 or 3.
The Truth will STILL not be the first casualty of war

I will say that I'm happy with the move to trade down and I'm happy with Jones at RB. Lets see what happens this year as a result of that trade. Everyone in media screaming for cowboys to take steven jackson and other RB's, heavily criticized cowboys for what they did..... but Bill isn't swept away by the media hype and all the hype going along with combine, pro days, etc. I think he can spot players and he's not afraid to put his judegement against the so called experts. That's what i think causes bad drafts, a staff that jumps on player bandwagons because everyone else raves about their speed, ht, wt etc.

Dream draft would be to take Mike Williams at 11. Then i would trade #20 for an early 2nd and 3rd. With the two 2nd rounders, i'd draft J. Tuck and B. Poole. IMHO that would be IDEAL. My biggest draft fear is that we take Dan Cody from Oak at #20. IMO he has BUST written all over him. He just seems like a guy that could change his mind 2-3 years into the NFL and decide to retire.

I'm scared of another "Jacob Rogers". We need guys to come in and make plays as a rookie.

I could live with Spears. The funny thing about Spears is he's a lot like Darren Howard. Kind of a tweener DE/DT. But he may turn out to be a lot better than some people think. He's got size and long arms and he's played against good competition. I remember a few years back when the Patriots drafted Richard Seymour and there was some grumbling from the talking heads about him being not fast enough to be an end and not sturdy enough to play inside. Turned out he can line up pretty much anywhere he wants and kick serious butt. Spears has close to that kind of potential. But he's at the very least going to be a decent pro. I'd rather have him than Merriman just because of the potential bust factor.
