Emmitt inks deal to retire with Cowboys
Emmitt inks deal to retire with Cowboys
04:51 PM CST on Thursday, March 17, 2005
From Staff Reports
Former Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith signed a one-year contract Thursday with the team, taking the next step in the process of retiring from the NFL.
Smith announced he would retire from the NFL on Feb. 3. After he submits official written notification of his retirement to the NFL, he will be placed on the Cowboys reserve retired list.
The Cowboys drafted the league's all-time leading rusher in 1990. Smith spent the last two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.
Smith played 13 seasons in Dallas (1990 to 2002) and eclipsed Walter Payton’s NFL rushing record of 16,726 yards in 2002.
I don't believe in team motivation. I believe in getting a team prepared so it knows it will have the necessary confidence
when it steps on a field and be prepared to play a good game... Tom Landry

Sad that it's almost official. I will miss seeing him play on Sundays.

Agree. I have always liked this gesture by teams towards their legendary players who have moved on.

I thought when players retired with their former team, they would normally sign a one-day contract, not a one-year contract.

What a sad day. Watching Julius Jones 2nd half of the season made me take all that Emmitt did for granted. If Jones had half the career that Emmitt did then he will something special.

Sad my arse. I'm glad he is retiring. I'm even happier that Jerry has worked out a deal to bring him home for his retirement party. It was time and no reason Emmitt needs to walk away from this game without his health. I am thankful to have been able to watch him play. Now I'm thankful he is retiring a Cowboy and apparently, health intact.

I'd still like a special roster exemption and let him start the first game at tailback for at least one play. Then stop the game at the appropriate moment and let him retire. Big gesture for him, fill the seats and get a big rating probably. Most of all a fitting gesture to arguably the greatest RB of them all.
Did you know there are only 5000 Snow Leopards in the wild now and they are confined to Central Asia? However, the effective global population (those likely to reproduce) is less than half that number.

One of two things will happen in 2010...
Emmitt Smith will be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame...
or
A mysterious fire with engulf a famous landmark in Canton, Ohio...
I'm betting on first-ballot enshrinement myself, but I'm keeping a set of matches handy just in case...

If he were a 49er or Packer I could see that happening.
