My question is......if the verticle leap wasn't relevent then why do they do it at the combine? how often do you see a DL jump up to bat a ball down??????I saw ed jones, haley and well every good DL does it so I can see how it transpires too the feild of play...... I like Merriman think he would be a good fit and he doesn't have short arms like Pollack....

How often do they have to jump 40" in the air to bat down a pass?

Let's see, take the guy that can bat down passes way over his head, or take the better football player?? Hmmm...

Ed Jones knocked down passes cuz he was 6'9", not cuz he jumped high. And alot of good that height/jumping did on "The Catch". I would of rather someone got to Montana before he lobbed it over the 6'9" DE.

So take the lesser football player cuz he jumps high and has longer arms? Yeah, that's smart. I can understand doing that if the players were equals, but they aren't.

By the way, Dwight Freeney is 6'1". How long are his arms?

You wanna know where a 40 inch vertical comes into play in football? C-o-v-e-r-a-g-e.

A QB can lunge the ball pretty high and the higher you can jump, the better you can defend it.

Wow. So let's just take all players that jump really high. No one will ever be able to pass on us.

It may not the only thing I give pollack is the SEC that is one tough confrence....his senior season he did not do as well as his junior.....the only thing that bothers me about him is his short arms when going up against a tackle with 36" arms they will be able to keep him at bay and he is not fast enough to speed rush past. he may wind up at OLB if so he may do better but then the verticle leap does come into play....... I think if we take howard fromthe saints this will all be moot anyways but for now I'll stick with Merriman personally I like D. ware he had like 27 reps on the bench ran a 4.07 in the shuttle and 6.85 in the cone and 38.5 verticle leap a 4.56 40

I will give pollack he had a 37" verticle which with his short arms is rather good.....

Actually.... In reference to arm length... I'm a big fan of players with long arms...Some of the top players in the game seem to have them... Julian Petersen, Jason Taylor, Julius Peppers...at least it seems like they do.. although I've never actually looked it all up... there arms just seem proportionally a good amount longer than most.

Is arm length a factor in vert. jump?... don't they have you raise your hand standing first, then measure from there?

I can't believe Pollack is getting crap because he has short arms.

Guess what geniuses?

Pat Kearney's arms are the same length as Pollack's.

EXCELLENT!!! So he'll go to either the Vikes or the 'Skins. IF DJ blows up his workouts, he's also a candidate for those two. MW here he comes.....

Vertical jump isn't just tested to see how high a player can jump. Its a good indicator of initial explosion out of the stance. The vertical jump is basically the same motion as a squat.

The broad jump is a better test for explosiveness then the Vertical jump.

It measures someone jumping outward (closer to being football related). And Merriman beat Pollack by a whopping 1 inch. Either way, 37 inches is still very impressive for a VJ.
