Who are the ball-hawking FS's in the 2005 draft?
I keep reading that Dallas would like to draft a ball-hawking Free Safety in the 2005 draft. If not then Lynn Scott gets the start at FS. It seems unlikely to me that Dallas takes the chance of starting a backup at FS with no depth behind him. Therefore, drafting a FS and keeping Scott as the backup (with Keith Davis filling in, but mostly starting on all special teams units) is the most likey scenario. Given that likely scenario, who are the best ball-hawking FS's in the 2005 draft and where do you think we'll pick one? Also, will it be FS we draft or is it possible we instead draft a CB to convert to FS? What do you guys think?

drafting a CB to convert to FS isnt the best option. If we can get Brodney pool, or Bullocks we will just play them there. If the 1st and 2nd round is gone and we STILL didnt get a FS or trade for more picks, expect us to try and convert a 4th or 5th round corner

I would have to say true FS would be:
Josh Bullocks
Brodney Pool
James Butler
Then some CB's that could go FS:
Antrel Rolle...if there at #20
Brandon Browner
Marlin Jackson
possibly Corey Webster...

Let's not forget Pete Hunter.....I'd love to see him compete with Josh Bullocks and move Roy to SS and Scott to back up Roy.

Don't forget, we can also get a Sean Consodine (Iowa) or Mitch Meeuwsen (Oregon St.) in the 5 or later. These guys are good FS, but not known as big tacklers. I would grab them in a heart beat.

I've always liked to see guys that can play both positions - FS and SS at the safety spots. CB's don't do it for me. You have to have a guy that can take away the run as well. If you can have a safety that can cover LB blitzes when the LB's get sucked up on the blitz or the run, you've got a solid safety in terms of run stoppage...
...If he can cover well that's great and that's what you want, but if your safety gets torched on the run -e.g.- Tony Dixon or Lynn Scott and I think even a guy like Ty Law will if he switches to safety, then you've got a problem in your defense. And then a problem becomes something a team can expose throughout a game, or even a season.
I don't want this to be a problem. I want us to blitz freely w/o suffering the consequenses of a poor tackling safety - on either side of the formation.

Looks like Considine's stock is rising, he may not be there in the 5th.
Still wondering why Meeuswon wasn't at the combine and why he wasn't listed on Oregon State's Pro Day on NFL.com

Thomas Davis is the elite prospect of this draft class. He can do it all (FS/SS) and do it well. He should be gone in the first, but if he slid all the way to the 'Boys second rounder--forget milking the clock to solicit trade offers. They better run that card to the podium.
The best pure ballhawking FSs in this class are Brodney Poole (Oklahoma) and Josh Bullocks (Nebraska). Poole may be available with the 'Boys second round pick. Bullocks may not go 'til the early third round.
My favorite late round steals are Sean Cosidine (Iowa) and Marviel Underwood (San Diego St). Sean may slip to the fourth, but has been moving up most draft boards lately. He's probably a late third rounder at this point. Marviel should be a late round pick (7th) or possibly even become an undrafted free agent.

Thomas Davis is definitely not the ballhawking FS type. He's more like Roy, and that's not what this team needs at FS. Maybe Davis could play in Coakley's spot.....but Bill doesn't want tiny LB's so they say.

I love reading stuff by lurkers like this. Informative stuff here.
Can a fellow poster get a scouting report on these guys?
I see how you've gotten a grasp on how if the Cowboys trade, they will trade a 2nd rounder, NOT a 1st rounder and they will wait till' the draft to do it if need be.

No way Scott starts this year...
Look for Hunter to start and a rookie to develop...
Shazor is a SS...Great hitter, not what we need...
