TheCount's Post Senior Bowl Mock (No DeCastro)
For the record, I'm all in on DeCastro at #14, if he's available. For the purposes of this mock, however, I'll pretend he's not.
Key Free Agents w/ Contract Estimates:
Carl Nicks, G - 6 Years / 48m / 16m Guaranteed
Laurent Robinson - 3 Years / 14m / 6m Guaranteed
Terrell Thomas - 2 Years / 6m / 3m Guaranteed
The Draft:
Round 1: Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama
Alabama's D is as close to NFL caliber as you can get and Upshaw was a very important reason why, I'd gladly have him on the Cowboys.
Round 2: Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia
In the 2nd, there are a couple of corners I have group close together. Without the combine, it's hard to separate them but for now, I like Minnifield.
Round 3: Ben Jones, C, Georgia
He was relatively quiet at the Senior Bowl, despite putting together a good week of practice and a good showing at the game.
Round 4: Hebron Fangupo, NT, BYU
I've never seen a guy rise like this without having done much since his bowl game. A few weeks ago, NFLDS had him as a 6th rounder, now they have him in the 4th. I guess they finally got around to watching tape of him. At 6'1" 330, and the majority of it muscle, he's the prototypical NT.
Round 5: Evan Rodriguez, TE/H-Back, West Virginia
Think Aaron Henandez. A bit undersized at 6'2" 245, but the guy can catch the ball and do something with it afterwards. He can dunk as well, if that helps to sell you on him.
Round 6a: Tank Carder, ILB, TCU
NFLDS says Carder is still a borderline 6/7th round pick, even though some sites as suggesting he'll go higher. Has a bit of an injury history, but I love his fire and aggressiveness.
Round 6b: Miles Burris, OLB, San Diego State
Played in a small pond, but incredibly productive even though he's undersized. Probably a pass rush specialist/special teams player with some upside. Also has experience at ILB.
Round 7: Darron Thomas, QB, Oregon
Very productive in Oregon's offense, but I don't think he's NFL ready. Probably a guy we try to stash ont he practice squad, but I think there's enough upside to consider carrying him on the roster if we can afford to go short somewhere else.
We need wins, and that's all we need. I don't give a damn about anyone on this roster over wins. I'd trade Ware, Lee and Dez if it meant more wins.

i am down with this plan
have heard mixed reviews on B Jones
give my chris rainey (FL) in 7th in place of your developmental QB
the only hole left after this would be FS

Well, in your scenario, where we don't re-sign Spencer or get a FA to replace him, we'll probably have to go OLB in Round 1, imo.
I think there's a good chance Ingram could be gone, so I think we'll probably have to take Upshaw.
But if that's the case, I'd really hope that we used the savings on Spencer to pick up an extra veteran ILB (Brooking and James possibly gone), a Safety, and possibly a DL.

Pretty good. Probably realistic, as well.
Especially like the Minnifield, Rodriguez and Thomas picks

I have trouble hopping on board with any scenario that has us only replacing one OLineman or is trusting a 3rd round pick to come in and start.
I don't hate this, but I can't think that any scenario is better than signing Nicks and drafting DeCastro. Just can't do it, especially considering that DE/OLB is such a high risk position as far as drafting since there are so many guys who just don't get it done at the NFL level

not bad man.
the only things i would have probably done different would have been replacing the NT you took with the guy from Washington, and instead of the HB/FB in the 5th hope that the CB Dwight Bentley is there.
i'm a little torn on whether the QB is worth it there....like it was said earlier if Rainey is somehow still there i'd probably go that route.

I'll take it! Text it to Jerry right away!
Garrett to players: Make today a great day; go about the business of winning! If you can't keep up then don't step up.

you do know Kosier tore his knee up again, right? There is not a whole lot of hope that he could be counted on to start next year. The guy is pretty broken down.

I don't see why he can't recover and give us another year. Can't overhaul the whole thing at once. If we sign Nicks, we have the other starting guard already on the team (Kosier,Holland,Dockery).

I could live with it. However, isn't Evan Rodriguez from Temple? I think he may have transfered from WVU a couple years ago.

I think Kosier is done. Hopefully I'm wrong, but why not draft his replacement? The end is near for him, if it hasn't already passed.
Nice mock, Count.

I'm all for drafting his replacement, but not at 14. Its just too high for a guard IMO. Plus i'm not sold that Decastro is the godsend. There is alot of guard talent later in this draft.

I'm with you on that one, but under this scenario, DeCastro isn't in play.

Hebron Fangupo is my pet cat, so you're all going to get sick of seeing him in every mock I post between now and the draft, I'm sure.
I do like Bentley, just a little weary of how quickly he's shot up boards, now they are saying he's a 3rd rounder... dunno if I could bite that early.

I think Koiser is done, but wouldn't be surprised to see us trot him out there for another year. At this point in his career, he should be a reliable vet backup. He was getting manhandled at RG.
I'm really eager to see the combine numbers on these corners.
