Default Today's Workouts! Valley Ranch....

local ties

Bishop Lynch's Moats, five former TCU players among participants

02:33 AM CDT on Friday, April 8, 2005

By TODD ARCHER / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING – The Cowboys began their predraft meetings Monday and will conduct workouts today for a number of local hopefuls at their Valley Ranch practice facility.

Among the players expected to participate are Louisiana Tech running back Ryan Moats, who played at Bishop Lynch and ran for 1,774 yards last year for Tech, and five former TCU players – quarterback Brandon Hassell, wide receiver Reggie Harrell, tight end Cody McCarty, tackle Anthony Alabi and linebacker Martin Patterson.

The Cowboys are allowed to work out players who live in the metropolitan area or attend a college in the area. Last year, the Cowboys drafted two players from their local workouts in the seventh round – wide receiver Patrick Crayton and cornerback Jacques Reeves.

Next week, the Cowboys will host 20 players from around the country for predraft meetings, however, those players will not work out.

One of the most intriguing visitors today will be Missouri cornerback Shirdonya Mitchell. A former teammate of Oklahoma receiver Mark Clayton at Arlington Sam Houston, Mitchell suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament during a pro workout.

A converted wide receiver, Mitchell ran a 4.3-second 40-yard dash before suffering the injury. If he is drafted or signed as a free agent, Mitchell would need significant rehabilitation time.

Other players visiting are Missouri receiver Thomson Omboga (Grand Prairie), Morgan State receiver Tommy Manus (Dallas), West Texas A&M receiver Anthony Armstrong (Carrollton) and Louisiana Tech defensive tackle Chris Van Hoy (Arlington).

Briefly: The arbitration case regarding former quarterback Quincy Carter's wrongful termination grievance scheduled for Thursday was postponed. A new date has not been determined ... The Cowboys signed safety Clint Finley, who worked out for the team Wednesday. Finley left Nebraska in 2001 and was with Kansas City in 2002-03 before he was released last season.

Mitchell was considered the more highly ranked high school prospect which just goes to show friggin smart OU has been in recruiting. Mitchell was unbelievable in high school with legit 4.4 speed. The coach was suprised OU even wanted to sign Clayton much less how good he has been.
But I still don't know what any team saw Thursday night that would have made them comfortable with waiting a round or two for the offensive lineman they wanted. ---Todd McShay
We just converted half our LB to DL. We have a 30m starting DL, it better be pretty friggin good.

To me, the most interesting players among the ten mentioned in the article are WRs Reggie Harrell and Tommie Manus, RB Ryan Moats and OT Anthony Alabi... Mitchell might interest me if he's got his 40 time back under 4.4 seconds again...

Manus is as big as Mike Williams, almost as big as Matt Jones and Vincent Jackson (6-6, 230 pounds)...
Smarter than the av-er-age bear...
