This day in History: June 6th, 1944
June 6, 1944, 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end on June 6, the Allies gained a foot- hold in Normandy. The D-Day cost was high -more than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded -- but more than 100,000 Soldiers began the march across Europe to defeat Hitler.

It is hard to even imagine what it was like for these men. Coming under heavy fire as the landing boat made their way to shore then to go across open flat land for 100 to 200 yards while machine guns are cutting your buddies down. I have the utmost respect for those who fought for this nation

I got to shake the hand of a man who was present on D-Day. He died about two years ago, I will never forget his face. I thanked him for serving and the look in his eyes is one I will always cherish. I go out of my way to thank veterans when I see them.

I see the footage and I have a hard time thinking I could do what these men were asked to do. They would have to drag me off the ship kicking and screaming.
German had the upper ground shooting across open terrain talk about a turkey shoot. Today we drop a couple of bunker busters level the area and come in with little resistances but these men went through a buzz saw

I would like to say that I'm brave but intentionally running towards machine gun fire? Can you imagine your mindset?

No I can't, then seeing guys in front of you dropping like flies. That to me was one of the most amazing feats I have wittnessed. These men were pretty darn special.

comes down to how strong your belief is that you are in the right. That what you are doing must be done.
At Cold Harbor in 1864, 7000 union troops were killed or wounded in just under half an hour.
They knew what was coming. In the hour before the attack, Hundreds of them wrote their names on slips of paper and pinned it to the back of their uniforms so that when their body was found it would not go in an unknown grave.

depends what kind of politics is being discussed I guess
I was at Omaha Beach in 2001, and at the US cemetary, was moving.
I didn't make it to the Canadian beach other than as a drive by in our tour bus. People often forget that the Canadians made the most progress on June 6 at Juno Beach.
Two American, Two British and One Canadian beach.
The soldiers had huge stones that is for sure.

No doubt there are men who have made the sacrifice knowing ahead of time they would not make it. The men of the Alamo knew there was little hope

All men that fought that day played a huge part. Hell, along with July 4, 1776,July 14, 1789, it is one of the three seminal events in the last 250 years.

It is funny though how the country that gave the most, the USSR with about 20 million dead, was just as fascist as Nazi Germany, if not more so.
