ESPND: DeMarcus Ware needs to be leader
Like Dirk Nowitzki, Cowboys All-Pro must leave comfort zone and challenge team
Updated: June 20, 2012, 2:08 PM ET
By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com
IRVING, Texas -- DeMarcus Ware will never be a look-at-me leader.
Ware will never be the guy that his Dallas Cowboys teammates gather around before a game to listen to a fiery motivational speech/sound bite. That's just not the style of a superstar who is reserved by nature.
"I'm not the hoo-rah guy for TV. I'm the hoo-rah guy in the locker room," Ware said. "What you guys don't see is me taking that leadership role for the defense, for the rookies, for the older guys and just doing what you need to do. You've got to lead by example, but sometimes you've got to check some guys and put them in place."
The Cowboys need Ware, a man described last summer by the NFL Network's Warren Sapp as incapable of leading ants to a picnic, to back up those words. He needs to back up those words if he wants his legacy to be more than the greatest Cowboy to never win a Super Bowl.

If you squint a little, and if the lighting is just right, Demarcus Ware does look like Ray Lewis.

QB Tony Romo has played 4 "Win or Go Home" games since 2008 (includes 2 playoff gms) -- in 3 of them, his QBR was less than 20"

Call me crazy but I think the article is pretty decent... Ware is a great great great player, HOF type of great but he must command that locker room like NOBODY else can.

But be wary of a certain few who may choose to get personally offended by such comments ...

Is there only one form of leadership?
Is Ware the only person on this team capable of becoming a leader?
Why must it be him and not someone else?
Do we not have any other leaders on this team?

This articles bings up some valid points.
But any discussion about this will be nixed by some because there are no problems with the team.
Love Ware.
Just wish he held others accountable ON THE FIELD!
Hopefully Lee will step up.

Nope. Not by a long shot. Take the difference in styles of three of the NFL's most successful, most revered head coaches, for example: Vince Lombardi; Chuck Knoll; Tom Landry.
Lombardi: Boisterous, animated and very direct, yet a great motivator who taught, and got, his team to win.
Knoll: Quiet, almost "hands off" in coaching style, according to a lot of/ most Steelers' players, but a successful leader nonetheless.
Landry: Quiet, even stoic, but extremely intense and successful, as we all know. Cowboys players have said they would hate to get "that look" if Landry was disapproving of them or their play. Winner? Leader? Yeah, I think so.
On Defense, we have Sean Lee rising as a more vocal leader. DeMarcus Ware may be seen as softer spoken, as if a sin to some, but his leadership is, and always has been, apparent by way of example in his play, work ethic and intense love of the game he continually shows. Add the fact that he has consistently shown he's always looking to take younger players under his wing, willing to teach them how to be better players ... yeah, he's a leader.
Can't believe the question of Ware's leadership still gets brought up, especially when by some of the lazy Dallas media/ reporters shlepping to put out a non-story. Dumb premise, IMO, no matter if some good points happen to be included or not.

How about we take this defense and use it as the example?
Wait, that doesn't support the keep calm and chive on theory around here.

You mean continue to b**** 'n' moan even when unnecessary? Isn't that your department? Carry on.
Using extended examples to make a point, while still directly speaking to the subject of Ware's leadership on THIS defense, is appropriate, whether it meets with your particular agenda or not.

Is there anybody else that wish held players accountable on the field?
Or just him in particular?
