Stephen A. Smith: Favre has 'a lot of nerve' to cast Tony Romo as victim; Jerry has given Romo 'weapons to produce'

Staff reports
Published: 27 June 2012 10:30 PM

During an appearance on NFL Total Access, Brett Favre joined a chorus of ex-NFL quarterbacks, including Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach, who have backed Tony Romo this summer.

“Romo is probably more like me than any of those guys,” Favre said during the interview. “I think way too much is cast upon him, good or bad. It’s Dallas, and much is expected. He’s carried those guys. I watched him last year. And I like Tony. I like the way he plays. I think at times he’s underrated.”

But that sentiment didn't sit well with analyst Stephen A. Smith. During an appearance on ESPN's First Take Wednesday, Smith had some harsh words for Romo.

"This dude [Romo] didn’t get it done. So when I sit here and listen to somebody like Brett Favre opening his mouth talking about Tony Romo like he’s a victim, what are you talking about?" Smith said. "[Romo] had DeMarco Murray, he had Dez Bryant, he had Miles Austin even though he got hurt, you always had Jason Witten. … You’re playing in a billion-dollar playpen and you’re talking about this dude as a victim? What world is [Favre] living in?"

Clueless.

Stick to hoops Stephen A.
Romo did just fine with the offense...but Murray was out, btw.
The man does not play defense.

Bombastic but I don't think its totally unreasonable for either a non-Cowboy fan who doesn't know the team like we do. Of course he may just be a Cowboys hater. I don't agree with him at all though.
Did you know there are only 5000 Snow Leopards in the wild now and they are confined to Central Asia? However, the effective global population (those likely to reproduce) is less than half that number.

Stephen A Smith just proved he doesn't know a thing about football. Just. Clueless.

Tossing around catch phrases like "billion-dollar-playpen" that really don't mean anything and are meant to shock and not analyze a damned thing is proof.

When you look at what's failed the Cowboys, time and again it's injuries to key components that have worn down and have little to no depth late in the season.

In 2006 the OL and interior defense failed. In 2007 the WR's and secondary failed in the playoffs. In 2008 it was the WR's, RB's, interior defense, and to some extent Romo himself.

In 2009 the OL and secondary failed again. In 2010 the OL and interior defense failed still yet again. And yet again in 2011.

Romo can make up for those deficiencies in the regular season, but not against more complete teams in the playoffs.

You ask why the Giants beat New England and twice and the #1 answer is "the defense". In Dallas, defense has been hit or miss.

When the offense has struggled in playoff games, the defense has compounded the troubles by repeatedly giving up big plays.

If I have complaints about Romo, it's 1) that he doesn't hold onto the ball strongly enough when he gets tackled or hit and 2) that he'd rather take a sack than throw the ball away.

That's it.

I posted this in the Farve/Romo thread the other day. Stephen A is a loudmouth idiot same vein as Bayless. Shock journalists trying to get a reaction.

Misnomer, unless they forgot the hyphen: anal-yst.
"'Room' always makes me chuckle. That's irrelevant. What we have on a given day really doesn't relate to what you're ultimately going to have and how you're going to manage."

I thank God for not making me an ignorant fool, and leaving some of my old friends when i was younger.

Because if i turned out different, Smith is the type of person i would hunt and *** down.

"Somebody, look at me! I"m piggybacking on Tony Romo's appeal to try to remain relevant, but really I'm no different at this point from any other message board poster willing to go to extremes in order to get attention."
When asked whether Jason Garrett is the right head coach for this team: "I don't think there is anyone else that could. I think he is an unbelievable coach. We've responded to him and he has made us better football players, better people. If you watch us I think we play with a certain relentless spirit." --Sean Lee

Wow is Stephen A. Smith really stupid sometimes.

The guy definately should never be asked about anything outside of basketball and really, to be honest, I often cringe when they ask him anything about that sport as well.

Man the off season sucks.

This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

SAS is an idiot. He's always telling Skip he should be banned from talking basketball. Well SAS should be banned from talking football. Dude is clueless. Has Romo had some solid weapons? Sure, but his offensive line has sucked his entire career. They were ok in 2007, but other than that the OL has been pathetic. Doesn't matter how many weapons you have if you don't have time to throw weapons don't matter. Not to mention our defense can't hold a lead to save their lives.

It would do my heart good to never see the name Stephen A. Smith in the Zone again.... Sadly, I believe Deion is modeling himself after this joker... he acted a lot like him on the top 100 reaction show.... Back to S.A.S., I believe he should be called A. Stephen Smith (A.S.S.)...his nickname can be "Jack".
