Movies:
"Point Blank" (French thriller from 2010)
"Gomorrah" (Italian crime movie - modern day "Mean Streets")
"Sin Nombre" (Spanish movie that is a gripping tale of coming illegally to USA from Cental America)
"City of God" (Brazillian flick about children in the RIo ghettos)
"Before The Devil Knows Your Dead" (Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke in a great thriller)
"Before Sunrise" & "Before Sunset" (The original and it's sequel 9 years later should be required viewing for all High School seniors).
"A Prophet" (French prison/crime flick that is really good)

Another one is a Spanish movie called "The secret in their eyes"

I enthusiastically second this opinion. One of the best on-foot chase scenes inside a soccer stadium you will ever see.
TV:
Everything I would recommend has been mentioned.
No one pays attention to power point. It's boring.

Not sure how well known it is but I never hear anyone talk about "The Town" with Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner. I love that movie, one of the best flicks about robbery ever IMO.
"Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" is an extremely well acted, well written movie that will absolutely crush your soul. It's a movie that delights in having you leave the theatre feeling worse about the world.
Others include "Frequency", "Cube", "Arlington Road", "The Butterfly Effect", "Mr. Brooks" and "Buried".
As far as TV shows, it was only on for one year but I really enjoyed "Now and Again".

I liked a show called The Event. It only lasted one season and then gone but I liked it.
I liked the Night Stalker. Both the original and the remake were pretty short lived.
I liked Alcatraz. I think that could have gone in a lot of interesting directions. I think it's gone now.
There was a show called Campus Ladies that came out on Oxygen of all places. It was funny but nobody ever watched it so.........
There was a show called Dead Like Me that I loved but it was gone in two seasons.
Rubicon was a show about an intelligence firm who analyzed intelligence for ABC agencies. It was quality television IMO but I guess nobody watched it. That show is better then 95% of the TV out there right now IMO.
I liked BSG but there was a show called Caprica that I thought was pretty good. I started to really like it but it too was cancelled.
Also, I liked a show called the deep end. It was only on for about 6 episodes but I like Addy Fisher so maybe that's why I liked it.

Independence Day grossed $817 million. Fargo grossed $60 million.
I'd say Fargo wasn't that popular with the public.

TV shows - Dual Survival - Best Survival show out there. Although one of the members was just fired for lying about his credentials.
Movies - Green Street Hooligans - if you like fighting and sports(it's soccer) you'll love this movie. It's about a gang that goes around fighting for their hometown soccer time. Apparently, that's how it is over in England.

I loved "the event" and "alcatraz". It is getting harder to try to get into new shows these days because networks are quick to pull the plug.
I even liked "terra nova", you can never have enough dinosaur shows IMO. The list goes on with other shows like "Prime suspect", "chase", "the river", "unforgettable", etc.
Everyone has a plan, until they get hit.

I think you can find them on hulu or YouTube.
Another film (English) that some might like is dog house. Comedy with guys that wind up in a town full of woman that are kind of zombies.
