Default Cowboys restructure DeMarcus Ware's contract

Cowboys restructure DeMarcus Ware's contract

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas – The Cowboys have created $2.755 million in salary-cap room by restructuring DeMarcus Ware's contract for the second straight season, according to multiple sources.

Ware was scheduled to count $10.301 million, but after lowering his base salary to $825,000 and turning the difference into signing bonus the All-Pro outside linebacker will count $7.546 million against the cap this year.

The Cowboys have a little more than $5.5 million in salary-cap room entering the season and would like to carry over as much room as possible to 2013 because of the remaining $5 million hit they will take from the NFL’s cap sanctions that were imposed in the offseason.

The Cowboys also re-worked the contract of center Ryan Cook, whom they acquired in a trade from Miami last week, the sources said. The Cowboys lowered Cook’s base salary from $1 million to $700,000 and gave him a $300,000 bonus and added a year to his deal with him scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent following the season. He will make $1.1 million in 2013.

wonder if we are trying to clear space to sign someone (holland or a wr) or are we trying to extend someone's contract?

That's a good question.

The two most prominent unrestricted free agents are Spencer and Jenkins.

Or they could simply be trying to create some space that they can roll into next season.

There are some potential issues with the cap in 2013. TheSport78, posted these figures in an earlier thread, concerning the big jump in base salaries for several players:

Miles Austin:

2012 salary: $1,150,000
2013 salary: $6,732,000

Dan Connor:

2012 salary: $800,000
2013 salary: $3,000,000

Doug Free:

2012 salary: $1,200,000
2013 salary: $7,000,000

Jay Ratliff:

2012 salary: $1,500,000
2013 salary: $5,000,000

Tony Romo:

2012 salary: $825,000
2013 salary: $11,500,000

Romo's contract would seem the most obvious. I believe his contract voids at the end of this season.
Thank you to all donated to the Jason Witten Camp drive!

Even aside from Romo they seem to like the flexibility that a little extra cap space gives them every year.

Didn't the article reference the fact that they want to be able to carry as much cap space forward next year to offset the $5 million penalty. I think you may see them do a few more of these so that they can carry that space forward.

Out of that five players I'll only guarentee one of em is here making that kind of money next year. See if you can guess who.

Romo's contract is voidable after the 2013 season.

I would believe it's probably to rework Tony's deal and extend him. That's just the guess I'd have on it.
