Strengths: Has a terrific frame. Is tall, has adequate bulk and the frame to continue to get bigger. His wingspan is excellent and he has great arm length and hand size. He moves well laterally and in the short-area. He has quick feet and shows the ability to mirror and slide against top pass rushers (see Terrell Suggs in 2002) when he plays with leverage. He is extremely difficult to get around as a pass rusher. He shows good hand-placement and the ability to ride defenders wide in pass pro. He simply engulfs a lot of DE's at the POA in the running game. He is a hard worker with good durability.

Weaknesses: Has great size but below average strength. Needs to improve his upper body power. Has long arms and a great frame, but doesn't jar defenders with his punch. Lacks explosiveness at the POA. Is more of a position and engulf defender than anything. Is a waist-bender that plays too high. Will look stiff when he doesn't play with leverage. Is mobile and has decent feet but the more space he's in the more susceptible he is to getting beat. He does not have good speed and will struggle to reach the second level as a run blocker. Also will struggle to consistently hit the moving target downfield.

Overall: Armstrong redshirted in 2000 before taking over as a fulltime starter three games into the 2001 season. He was a starter from his redshirt freshman season in 2001 on and finished his collegiate career with 45 starts in 49 games played. He was twice named first-team All-Pac 10 (2002 and 2004) and was honorable mention in 2003. Armstrong is a left tackle prospect with great size, long arms, durability, experience and a solid work ethic. However, while Armstrong does have some upside because of his size, he's overrated as an NFL draft prospect because of all the national attention and the awards he won at the collegiate level. In all reality, Armstrong has below average strength, explosiveness and mobility. As a result, we expect him to slip to the middle of the second day of the draft and to level off as nothing more than a reserve journeyman type in the NFL.
