NFL Video - Ray Horton (Cardinals DC) Breaks Down the Fire Zone Blitz

I love stuff like this.

"I just kind of stopped in the middle of a route, which is the worst thing you can do," Ogletree said. "He just told me, 'What were you thinking?' I kind of mumbled something to him and he was like, 'You're stupid.' "

"If we can get the running game going early, that'll open up the passing game for Troy." - Jerry Jones, 11/12/12

With the disclaimer that while this is cool, I wish they'd get more in depth instead of dummying it down for casual fans.

That was about as great a breakdown as I've seen in a long time.

Notice a few things:

- Even though they bring five guys on the blitz, the real pressure is coming from the 3 LBs through the A-gaps.

- The DEs are playing contain first in case Vick tries to escape the pocket.

- Fire zone blitz's commonly have a 3-3 coverage on the backend, but the corners are usually playing man.

- Vick's slot WR has a small open as he is getting passed on to the safety. Looks like he still can't read a blitz.
"It's little bit like the description of pornography from years back. It's hard to define it. But you know what it is at the end of it. It's hard to define it. I think you know who is more physical. Often times you see that in the fourth quarter. A lot of time the team on the other side feels it. We pride ourselves on being a physical football team. It's important to us. It's an important time of the year to lay that foundation." - Coach Garrett

Very interesting. The Cardinals used that blitz over and over and the Eagles never seemed to have an effective counter. It's a perfect call vs. play-action.

Vick is one of the worst QBs in the league vs the blitz. Cardinals gameplan was perfect defensively to beat the Eagles.
