Default iPad Mini Commercial

Prices and spec of the iPad Mini

Wow. The iPad Mini has a bigger screen (7.9") than the Nexus 7, (7") yet it's lower resolution? (iPad Mini 1,024x768 pixels (163 ppi) vs Nexus 7 1,280x800 pixels (216 ppi))

Considering Apple is always talking about retina display, no way I saw this coming. I would point at the report that Samsung told Apple it would no longer make displays for them, but Samsung reports that is false.

It's the same resolution as the iPad 2 (which isn't retina), but on a 40% smaller screen, so the resolution will look better than the iPad 2. I've compared the iPad 2 and the retina iPad 3 side by side and the iPad 2 is pretty darn close.

In other words, the screen should look fantastic. But it is odd, because Apple always likes to make the claim that they have the best screen.

Why the hell is this 329 for the base model?

I was hoping for 249 max. 199 would be a killer I could buy 2 for my 6 year old twin boys.

That's not a real commercial.

The price is about $80 more than a similarly spec'd Nexus 7. Considering Google sells the N7 at cost, $329 isn't unreasonable for a product that has a profit margin. As a consumer, I enjoy low prices as much as the next guy but I didn't buy my car at cost and I don't pay cost for meals at restaurants. Similarly, I don't expect to buy electronics at cost; all I ask is for a reasonable price for the product.

That said, I won't be buying one.

I think the resolution is a product of two things: Apple wanting developers to have consistent parameters and production costs. The only options were 1024 x 768 or 2048 x 1736. Eventually the 2048 x 1736 display will trickle down to the mini but manufacturing costs will have to drop more, especially if the mini is using the same touchscreen assembly as the iPhone 5.
