This is why we keep Spencer
Anthony Spencer is one of the league’s best run defenders, and this game was a vintage display of why that is true. He leads the NFL this season amongst 3-4 OLBs in run stop percentage, a per snap measurement of how many stops he makes in the run game, and he led the team in this game in both tackles (7) and stops (6), making a constant nuisance of himself around the edge.

5 years 30 million?
Lol - that deal would have been signed 3 years ago if it were an option.

6 years - $44.5m with $17.5m guaranteed is the starting spot for Spencer's contract.
It's what Ahmad Brooks got in the offseason and Spencer is a <slightly> better than Brooks.
Spencer is playing great -- I still don't think the Cowboys can afford him. There are so many contracts like that - that are possibly at any one time under the current salary cap structure.

Ugh, he took a while and he turns 29 next year. I'd low ball him.

Anybody know how much dead money is in next year's cap figure? I thought I read there was 30 million dead money in this year's cap.

Wait, I'm confused. Does Anthony Spencer suck or not?
Or, is it somewhere in between Pro Bowl and jag?

Look at the rest of his years as a Cowboy, aka, his NON CONTRACT years, don't think you can find numbers that justify signing him for a lot and long term. If you can, I'll gladly eat my words.

There's nothing wrong with his numbers unless you think all a OLB has to do is rack up sack numbers.

His numbers nor his play are worthy of signing the big contract he'll look for and most likely get from his great play this year.

5 year 30 mill? For a guy who is making 8.5 right now?
It will be more like 5 year 45 mill. And I have no doubt we pay it (or franchise him again)

Dead money is irrelevant if you realize that new deals are always super cap friendly in the first two years. A 5 year deal for 45 mill might cost us about 3 mill in cap space for 2013. That'd be a huge savings from what he is costing against the cap now (around 8.5 mill).
There simply is no reasonable argument that we can't afford him.
Those who argue otherwise are simply bad with arithmetic.

Spencer was the best defender on the field for the Cowboys Sunday night (with Brent a close second).
It's going to be hard losing him.

can we tag him again?
"I could've done a $2 billion takeover (in another industry) with the capital I put in the Dallas Cowboys," he says. "I really could see (myself as) the idiot who had something real good, who blew it all to coach the Cowboys. I just knew that was going to be my legacy." Jerry Jones 9/14/2012
