I think he has a great ceiling. He also has a very large learning curve.
At the very least, I think he can develop into a very good #2. His YAC ability is terrific - he is a playmaker.
But he is still a project, and I am not into predicting. He has a way to go. We will eventually (2006) have to draft a good prospect. But I do think that Crayton has earned some love in the organization.

Next year's WR class is just brutally bad, so we aren't gonna be upgrading at WR for quite a while.

Here is the rule of thumb... as a former WR, this is what I was taught...
You keep your inside hand as the "high hand" as the defender across the middle will almost always go for the mid-section "kill"... if your inside hand/arm is low, then your elbow will take the shot and you will cough the ball up... you take the shot to the ribs, but you have a better chance at holding on the the ball... and my WR coach always told us (and he was a hard-ace)... "if you touch the ball... you damn well better catch it"...
When you are sent over the middle you secure the catch, then duck your head and be ready for extreme contact... if you intitiate the contact then you have a chance for extra yardage... Irvin and Novacek were masters at that...
The problem with many WR's is that when they go over the middle they go for the "bread-basket" catch... good db's and lb's know this and that is why they go for the mid-section on hits...
Going over the middle is no pic-nic I assure you... your ribs take a beating...

Crayton may end up as one of our great draft picks... he has some work to do... but he has an innate feel for the game...
He already catches the ball with his hands... that is something Irvin had to learn...
The jury is still out on Crayton... but I see a LOT I like in him...

We did identify a problem with the way Morgan was catching some balls. Johnson said he had a similiar problem when he was younger and once he corrected it he got much better. I'm sure he and the coaches can correct Morgan's problem and it will make him much improved.
Additionally, people seem to dismiss the fact that Morgan came in during the middle of the season. He didn't know the playbook and he had no familiarity with the QBs. That will be completely different this year. He will completely know the playbook and he and the QBs will get to know each other. Also, Morgan was hurt during the latter part of the season. He will be healthier this year.
I still really like the Morgan-Bryant trade. We got a guy with good upside and with a good attitude. I think Morgan will have a much greater impact on our offense this year and will be able to fill in if Glenn or Johnson go down with an injury.
Morgan's maturation in Dallas and the growth of the younger guys will solidfy our receiving corps this year. Next year we will probably be more aggresive in updating the position either through the draft or via free agency.

I have told you before - WR is probably the hardest position for me to personally evaluate - the passing game just isn't my background.
But I have watched Crayton a lot - I remember him at DeSoto - great athlete. In TC, I took lots of notes, and he ruled my notepad.
The guy is just an amazing athlete, but, unlike Randal Williams, he is also an amazing football player. If he can master the mental aspect, he writes his own ticket.

I am a HS football junkie... and I remember Crayton VERY well at DeSoto... I didn't know what happened to him... but when I learned of where he went, I wasn't surprised he was a one-man team...
You are right... he is a "football player"... and he is NO Randall Williams...

i nearly agree completely with you and CR, but, i just don't think he can be a lead receiver that every team fears and game plans for. I think he can be a big contributor and a fan favorite, but, a "Marvin Harrison" type.....seriously doubt that....hope I'm wrong though and y'all get to make fun of me for years over it.

oh... don't discount yourself NH... we already make fun of you...
I will say... as a fan of Texas High School football, that Crayton always made a difference... and he did in college as well... give him a chance... you will like what you see...

I would never have the Huevos to call him a Marvin Harrison type of player. I would eventually have to eat that.
But I think we are deep enough at WR to not be too concerned. With him as a prospect, Quincy's second season here, Key's toughness and Glenn's big play ability, we are not in horrible shape. Parcells is on record saying that he can get good value in mid rounds for WR, that WR by committee is something he believes in.
But there is NO DOUBT we will eventually have to address the position.

We could use a much, much better backup receiver that would legitimately challenge for the starting job. If Bryant hadn't blown up, he could have been that guy.
As it stands, you can't improve every position in one offseason. You're going to have some positions where you just cross your fingers and hope guys stay healthy (Johnson, Glenn) while other guys can just provide sparks here and there (Morgan, Crayton, Copper).
This squad is coming off a 6-10 season, so clearly there were a lot of holes. It's done a great job of filling as many of them as possible, and in doing so providing the franchise a direction in how it plans on attempting to win games.
It just looks like receiver will be one of the positions where there won't be a clear upgrade brought in at. Also, as someone mentioned, with Campbell/Witten, I'd anticipate a lot of two-tight end sets, but who knows.

One plus, I think Bledsoe helps our younger guys look better if Glenn were to go down again this year. Really though I think even with our current lineup maybe Glenn should be #3 wr--perserve him some. I would also feel much better having Glenn coming off the bench on 3rd downs to give us a boost over one of the younger guys.
