June 1 FS possiblities? anyone
I was curious to know if anybody knew of any possible June 1 FS cuts that might be available to help fill the FS void, since we didn't sign one in free agency, didn't draft one, and to this point haven't signed an undfrated UFA FS prospect?

Goose was with Norm this afternoon and talked about that some. Basically Goose said those days are over now. If you remember back to last june 1st, there wasn't but a couple of players cut league wide. The vets to be picked up later are those who are cut in preseason.
This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

We need to grab a veteran FS stick him back their for a year and get someone for the long term next year...unless we can get Pete Hunter to play safety which he has already said he has no interest in doing so

The Jags drafted a safety. That may re-start the trade talks regarding Donovin Darius. He isn't a free safety, he is more like Williams and Woodson. But our defense did pretty good when we had both those guys.

We may be getting Ty Law it sounds great, but he probably won't want to play FS or take less money to come to Dallas. Also where exactly did you hear we may be getting Law? I haven't heard that before now except in speculations

Additionally, I think Keith Davis will get a shot to start and I think Pete Hunter will be at FS unless we trade him.
Jackssonville also still needs help at CB. Maybe we could do a deal with Hunter and a mid round pick next year for Darius.

didnt here it anywhere, just a hunch with BP's history with the player.
and at Law's age, a move to FS is not crazy. Happens all the time

that is true, but he is still considered one of the top cover corners in the league. I also think that with our front 7, FS becomes less of a priority. Parcells obviously loves Keith Davis, and so do I, especially for the intesnity he brings on special teams. Not all of our players have to be top 3 round picks or FA's, we're bound to find a diamond in the rough somewhere. Who knows, maybe the kid we drafted today will turn some heads.

Frankly, Im more worried about our nickelback who can cover the slot WR.
FS is not a premium position. Go to NFL.com and check the spares who are starting at FS in this league.

I agree that it is not a "premium position"... but it is for us... we need to sign/develop a FS in a hurry in order to turn Roy loose and get him in the box...

I at least want another UFA to give Davis and the Ball State guy competition.
As for slot - I actually want to see Pete Hunter/Lance Frazier/Bruce Thorton/Jacques Reeves.....and whoever else we have leftover from last year battle for the position.

uh, yea I know its NOT the most important position on the defense for most teams. but Dallas having a talented player at the FS position would really help Roy Williams - that is the main reason why we dont need FS to be a weakness again, so Roy doesnt have to compensate for the FS and he can do his thing.
They will probably be fine with young and hungry Davis competing for the job but why not sign a vet who can try to pick up where Woody left off? Nothing against Davis, Scott, or the kid out of Ball State - but you cant have enough talented vets on the field.
Ty would be a good safety and he is close to needing to move to that position with his recent injuries. I just dont know how much money he would want. It wouldnt be worth it if he's askin for too much money.
the fact that teams are not offering him top CB money, means that he might be willing to take a little less and play S for the Cowboys if he's still unemployed close to training camp. He's too long in the tooth to be asking for too much money (plus he's coming off of an injury) A position change might prolong his career like it did for Rod Woodson.
a real long shot I know, but stranger things have happened.

Uh guys...unless Chavous is cut, we will be in a FS competition between Justin Berauilt and Keith Davis next season. Berauilt has my vote to win the job easily. He is more than qualified and is going to be one of the smartest players on the field. Won't make mistakes and is very fluid in coverage. He said before he was drafted BP called him and told him he had a safety spot for him in Dallas and was he interested? Justin jumped at the remark and here he is.
