I think it's a 3 year process before anyone can judge a draft class. There were people that were sure Bruce Carter was a wasted pick at this time last year.

Yeah, three years should be enough to tell.
BTW, that is another reason why the 2009 disaster is so brutal now.

I think three years is fair. At the present time I don't see the vast improvement that I read about in some of these posts. These last couple of drafts are going to be bad unless more players step up. It could happen.

Nothing pisses me off more than James Marten in the 2nd round.

I would not judge a draft class good or bad until the 3rd year in the league. There is no guarantee that Garrett's approach will succeed; however, it IS a different approach. As long as Garrett is the HC, I'm not going to worry about what was done prior to him becoming the HC.

The process changed to drafting injured players who projected to be earlier picks if they weren't hurt. So far, we haven't seen their full potential. Guys likes Murray, Lee and Carter have been hurt a lot.

Three solid starters in any class — Smith, Carter, Murray — is great, plus we got a contributor in Harris.

It's a good thing no other general manager Dallas has had did that. Oh wait, look at 1980, 1981 and 1982. The best pick during those years when we had 11, 14 and 16 picks was probably Doug Donley.
The 1983 class of 12 was saved by Jim Jeffcoat in the first round. The 1984 class of 15 was saved by Eugene Lockhart in the sixth.
In fact, if you look through Dallas' draft history, there have been a lot of drafts where only one or two players out of 12-plus have made a significant impact.
Not defending the atrocious drafting, just pointing out that draft failures aren't just limited to the scouts/GM currently working for the team. It's a difficult process and I'm just thankful for the players we've hit on the past few years and hopeful Dallas will be able to avoid the busts this year.

Yep, the Bill Parcells pick of Barbie Carpenter kinda killed the "it's only Jerry that makes bad picks, etc.. idea".

The span from 2006 to 2010 can pretty much be summed up as:
Dez Bryant, Anthony Spencer, and some solid contributors.

I think you want to find 2 starters and 1 role player out of a draft. Some of the starters may take some time to come around to being able to play...thats the real tricky part IMHO.
You do that for a few years and you can play in the NFL. The big bust drafts just set you back so much that it put everyone into panic mode and really just blows up in your face.

Code:
Year Rnd Pick Player
2011 1 9 Tyron Smith
2011 2 40 Bruce Carter
2011 3 71 DeMarco Murray
2011 4 110 David Arkin
2011 5 143 Josh Thomas
2011 6 176 Dwayne Harris
2011 7 220 Shaun Chapas
2011 7 252 Bill Nagy
Three starters and a solid contributor in Harris.
I can't really blame the scouts/draft process for Josh Thomas or Bill Nagy. The team probably should have tried a little harder to keep them from getting claimed by other teams.
It's a longshot for a 7th round pick (Chapas) to make a team.
That leaves us with David Arkin. He is the one pick of 8 that's really difficult to understand. He was probably worth a shot, but it seems like he should have been a 6th round pick instead of a 4th.
Overall, I can't complain about that draft. If the biggest issue in all past drafts was that they took a 6th rounder in the 4th, then they would have been quite successful.
