Default BR: Breaking Down Dallas Cowboys' Franchise Tag Decisions

Last year, the Cowboys used the franchise tag on linebacker Anthony Spencer, and it cost them $8.8 million.

Spencer is high on the team’s list of players to re-sign, but it is unlikely team owner Jerry Jones will slap the tag on him since the Cowboys are $20 million over the NFL’s salary cap and Spencer’s price tag is around $10 million (via NFL.com).

Using the tag on Spencer isn’t completely off the table, but for this piece, we are going to pretend that they are unable to do it this time around.
Outside of him, there are a few players the Cowboys can use the tag on to keep for depth reasons.

If the Cowboys' put the tag on Jenkins or Felix, I'm out. What a ridiculous article.

Can you imagine paying either of those guys the average of the top five salaries at their position in the NFL?

Both are injury-prone and decent at best.

I don't care if Jerry is slowly slipping into senility, there's no way that happens.

The whole premis of the article is stupid. Only Spencer is Franchise tag worthy. No need to bring up JAGS or even worse then JAGS in regards to the tag.

I hit the link and saw that and thought " this must be the most ridiculous article I've seen all offseason".

So you read my mind.

I'm pretty sure the writer has no concept of what the Tag ramifications are.

I make a motion that no BR article ever be put on the Zone.

Anyone second it?

Sure it's ridiculous for some of them but you either have to franchise them or outbid others to keep them if that's your objective. I think they would consider keeping Jenkins and Felix for the right price and it'd have to be right.

I suspect Jenkins may get one team to pay him but I'm not sure about Felix. Neither one are great pickups IMO because of their injury history. But both can play esp if used correctly and trained correctly.

I'm not a big fan of either but if I think if Felix lost some weight and worked on his speed a little he would be a good backup esp if you used him in space more. The big question is can he stay healthy.

On balance I'd probably not keep him.

OT I've dismissed.

L.P. Ladouceur is tag worthy and it wouldn't cost much ... although I expect a long-term deal to be worked out with the deep snapper.

If we did work out a long-term deal with Spencer and had not locked up Ladouceur, I wouldn't hesitate to use it on him.

Use the franchise tag for depth purposes.

That's a new one.

We'll settle this with a good dust up.

I don't think anyone other than Spencer falls in the franchise conversation. I do think there will be some conversation about Jenkins. I think its mox nix as neither Jenkins or Felix are likely to be here.

This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.
