Default Ex-NFL scout Bryan Broaddus on how Cowboys passed on Eagles' RB LeSean McCoy in 2009

SportsDayDFW.com
Published: 17 February 2013 01:58 AM

Former NFL scout Bryan Broaddus joined KRLD-FM 105.3 to talk about the draft and the Cowboys. Here are some highlights.
On the draft board and 'leapfrogging' to fill a need:
Bryan Broaddus: That's where they get in trouble. If you go back to the 2009 draft, they sat there and they had LeSean McCoy with a first-round grade. The problem was, they weren't willing to take LeSean McCoy. That's the issue. Don't windowdress your board. They're sitting there in the second round and they've got LeSean McCoy with a first-round grade on their board. That's value. They did it (got it right) with Sean Lee, they did it with Bruce Carter. They sat there, they took the guy that was on the board that they were supposed to take. Mistakes are made when you jump around on the board. Jerry's done it a couple of different times. The Quincy Carter draft, we had Kendrell Bell there, first-round grade, ends up going the second round; goes right behind us to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ends up being AFC defensive rookie of the year. And then we take Quincy Carter. That was a forced pick right there. You had a guy there you had a better grade on, you probably could have got Quincy Carter later in the draft. That's where you get in trouble leapfrogging around.

Sometimes need is more important then talent.

If you had #1 and #2 overall this year would you have drafted Luck & Griffin (with no intent to trade). No.

The problem was they had signed Barber to a mega deal and drafted Felix in the 1st and Choice in the 4th in 2008.

Kendrell Bell flamed out just about as fast as Quincy. I think he had either a steroid or other substance abuse history.

This is an example so extreme it's not worth even considering.

Luck and Griffin aren't in the draft this year.

But if you just said you'd have passed on Luck and Griffin with a 32 year old Tony Romo with 1 year left on his deal and a crazy cap number, then I'm definitely glad you're not the GM.

The Colts took Luck with PEYTON MANNING under contract, and you'd pass for Romo. Gebus. If Luck or Griffin were in position for us in this years draft, I'd take either one of them with zero hesitation.

As far as the OP, Broaddus loves telling this story. This one and the one about Parcells and Ware/Spears. I have yet to hear him tell a story about one he got wrong.
We need wins, and that's all we need. I don't give a damn about anyone on this roster over wins. I'd trade Ware, Lee and Dez if it meant more wins.

No but the draft is about value. You take the best talent and value at that spot.

If for some reason you had #1 and #2 overall you take the QB and Richardson or Khalil.

It would have beyond stupid to take McCoy at that point in time. Everyone would have panned the pick, because it would have made no sense whatsoever.

I don't understand how we can spend a 2nd round pick on a RB, after investing a first round, and 4th round pick the year before, plus a big money deal to our "starting" RB

Just as "leapfrogging" is bad, so is hindsight, especially when you forget the key details

was 2009 a bad draft? yes...Could we have picked up some different players who turned out to be good? Yes...But McCoy was not one of those picks...pick another Broaddus...we had a whole draft full...

Not a single pick from that draft (2009) is on the team right now.

If BP was a great scout, he would still be doing it. What has he done since BP fired him??

I think Jerry is a terrible GM, but it would not have been wise to draft McCoy after signing Barber and drafting 2 RB's the year before.

Of course you take Luck.

That was not the question. His question was absurd because he said would take BOTH Luck AND Griffen with the #1 and #2 pick because they were BPA. (of course this assumes that they were #1 and #2 on everyone's board--which they most certainly were not)

That's beside the point.
If you have had the #1 and #2 picks last year, the obvious answer would have been to take Luck (assuming he is your favorite) and then you fleece Washinton for THREE 1st round picks and a 2nd in exchange for your 2nd overall pick...like the Rams did.
