Cut him already. Why are they trying to find something that is not there...admit the mistake of signing him to big money. Cut him and move on.

This sounds like a move to give the guy one last chance to do something to turn his bad play around. I don't think he's going to make the cut on the team this year, I just don't.

Yup, so obvious. What a terrible, terrible GM he is.

If the coaches or scouts see something there that makes them believe he could play OG then why not? I don't see the harm in kicking the tires there and seeing if he could do it. I would hope he is working his tail off with the strength coach to increase is upper body strength. If he is committed to doing it I say great! Last thing I would want to do is make a mistake in cutting a guy who just had a bad year let's see what the kids got?

Nobody is going to trade for him with that contract. You're dreaming.

But isn't there a cap hit in 2014 for this cut? That's sort of important to the story.

On the other hand if he takes a pay cut - for example if he's will to take 2 mill a year then we've got a 6.175 mill cap hit and another year to see if we can turn him back into the guy we (and several other teams) liked so much a few years ago

I have not heard anyone that knows anything about O line play that think Free can be even a mediocre guard. Not one.

You're right there would be a cap hit of $4.15m in 2014 or an $8.3m cap hit in 2013. But none of his salary is guaranteed. The Cowboys can say take a new $2m salary deal or we will cut you and you can test out the FA market. He could probably get more as a FA from someone.

2 mill somewhere else? I don't know. I expect he'd have to take backup money elsewhere.

I thought about that, but look how we act when players from other teams get cut. We ignore all the problems and just hear the name. Free got a lot press when he signed his deal a couple years ago and some team that has cap room may think they are getting a steal.

Yes. But we aren't GMs and it is pretty clear that he's a guy who is going to have to take a one year type "show me" deal. No one is going to over spend on him at this point.

Free makes too much to platoon at any position. Im sorry but we need to cut him and move on. It was a bad contract.
