Default Stunning cuts in Atlanta; meanwhile, at Valley Ranch

. . . we agonize over keeping or not keeping marginal players such as Spencer, Ratliff, Hatcher, Felix, Sensebaugh, Miles Austin and lord knows why, Free.

Why is it that we, Cowboys fans and the front office, seem to be so sentimental about players who half worn out their welcome, are over the hill etc? Huh? Huh?

It seems to me that some teams just cut players without that much emotional upheavel. I remember Emmitt Smith playing his worst football (even Aikman) and over the hill and yet staying on. Clinging, even.

When we learn to properly evaluate players and their skill levels when they are in their 30s and skill drops even a bit, we will, I think, be a better team.
NFL football has to be a revolving door of player talent, not a crib-to-elderhood nanny. Cowboys half not learned that. Teams like New England, and now Atlanta, seem to be brave enough to cut ties and save money at the same time.

Let me no if you agree. If not, dont give me no lip.

I get what you're trying to say, however, using Emmitt as an example is foolish. He earned the right to play here as long as he did. For that matter, there was absolutely no option behind him.

I don't think sentiment or emotion has anything to do with it.

I don't know?? lol we cut Davis/Colombo/Barber/both Roy Williams/Hamlin-Kosier-Owens-Olshansky-Gurode-Choice recently... Ratliff is here for depth & the switch to 4-3 should benefit him.. Miles is a solid #2.. Spencer was only the best defensive player on the team this past season & had a solid season in 2011 as well.. Ryan loved Hatcher & now it has come out that Marinelli loves what he sees on tape of Jason Hatcher.. Felix won't be here & who knows about Sensabaugh & Free... The Falcons have players ready to step into those roles this second, who can you say that about on the defensive line of the Cowboys???

Yeah, not really sure what GimmeTheBall is getting at here. But that's nothing new.

That is my point. He "earned the right to play here as long as he did"?

That is the problem, sir.
Oh, he was a great player and earned the right to stick around and make us staid, mediocre, worse, etc.
No player earns the right to stay beyond the time he can play at a high level.
No player should be able to stay on the payroll because he was once an icon, star, inventor of baby milk, curer of diseases, etc. (well, maybe the last two)
No player should be too celebrated to allow him to slow us down.
You, sir, half proven my point, and that is we are too darned sentimental.
You sir, are a great fan who values what players half done. But I hope you never are our GM because we be loaded down with marginal players past their usefulness.

Again, I admire you loyalty. But NFL football half no place for sentimentality, you big lug. Now give gimme a manly hug and rethink your position.

He's saying we give big contracts to talented players on the downside rather than letting them walk. I don't think there's much doubt that Jerry is very loyal to his players and staff. Sometimes it bites him, buts its probably something that has served him well in business if not on the field.
We need wins, and that's all we need. I don't give a damn about anyone on this roster over wins. I'd trade Ware, Lee and Dez if it meant more wins.

Yes. he played well with Ariz. I seem recall Emmitt running for negative yards against our aged defense when he first came back to play us.

I'm just stating that a couple of examples from over a decade ago don't really prove your point, and most if not all of your current examples seem off the mark.

We've cut several overpaid/underperforming players in recent years, and I don't think sentiment or emotion have anything to do with keeping those that remain.

Also not really sure why you mentioned Felix Jones, since I haven't seen or heard one person "agonizing" over losing him to free agency.

It's called doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.Jerry keeps fooling himself that these core players are good enough to make a run at a championship. he's fooling himself.

sigh

Matt Ryan is currently on a rookie contract making $10m AAV. He is about to be signed to over twice that much.

People that cry doom about the cap are fools.
