Sign Ronde to a 1yr to groom Johnson and teach this scheme
A 1 year deal isn't a stop gap when you consider Matt Johnson is essesntially a rookie. Give Johnson a year to practice in this system under a future HOF and see what you have with Church, he was playing well before he got injured. Focus on OL and DL in the draft. Also Ronde would come pretty damn cheap

Not a bad idea if the price isn't too high.
The Cowboys have three pretty large ways to get more (and a few smaller ways) cap room:
Free (rework or cut...before or after Jun1)
Spencer (new contract)
Romo (extend)
It just depends on if they want to use those options or not.

^^^ this. Ronde or Ed Reed would be a good addition for 1-2 years "cheap" but as of right now we have no money to work with....

He made $3 mil in 2012, so I assume the contract would be around that amount. This is really the only veteran S that I'd want other than Ed Reed, but Barber would probably come cheaper (Reed made $7.2 mil plus bonuses last season).
It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.

i really like this idea as well. Veteran leadership to help mold some of the younger secondary players. Matt Johnson would hopefully take advantage of the situation and soak it all up.

Barber would be a good addition. Yes, he is old, but he is a stud.

Or, let monte Kiffin teach our safeties how to play this scheme and don't bring in barber at all?

our safeties are?
Church - coming off a major injury (but promising)
Johnson - hasn't shown anything
McCray - great ST, not so good looking as a starter
We have to get more bodies here.

Wow, what a novel idea! Let the teacher teach and the student learn.
Say no to anyone older than 27. No stop gaps! This team needs to get younger and develop fast if they want to enjoy success in the near future.
Bringing in has-beens is not the answer. Look to the draft!

Stop ruining the fun
I like the idea of Barber, but it's probably not going to happen. It's one of the only reasonable moves we could make that would be a solid upgrade.
He may come cheaper here than other places because of ties to Kiffin and he didn't stand to make much money this season at any rate.
And as mentioned before, he probably would be a good influence on our young safeties.

It SHOULD already be a given that Monte Kiffin, Jerome Henderson and Joe Baker would Teach our safeties how to play in the scheme.
However with the current roster of unproven safeties and/or any we may draft...it would not be a bad idea to get a proven veteran in case our unproven safeties get injured or flat out suck on the field.
Of course that is if it is at a very reasonable contract and that is if we can even afford ANY contract as currently we could not bring him in here even for a vet minimum contract.

I wouldn't mind a flyer on a veteran FA S, but it should probably be someone we could cut going into the season if outplayed by whatever rookie we bring in in the middle rounds. It'd be better to roll with a rangy rookie and backup with players who can contribute on Teams if we can get the right guy in the draft.
When asked whether Jason Garrett is the right head coach for this team: "I don't think there is anyone else that could. I think he is an unbelievable coach. We've responded to him and he has made us better football players, better people. If you watch us I think we play with a certain relentless spirit." --Sean Lee

To some extent, I agree. It's a young man's game and youth and enthusiasm seems to trump experience more often than not these days.
But I don't think Barber would be a stop gap. He'd be an improvement over what we've had-- the guy had a pretty good year last year at FS. He's older, but it's not like we're talking about a worn down DT here. And as long as he's not thought of as a long term solution, (1 year contract?) I think it would be a good signing.
I know baseball analogies don't belong in the world of football, but I liken it to the ageless Omar Vizquel helping groom a young Elvis Andrus for the rangers.
