Default Is It Too Much To Ask For...

2-3 more FA signings?

FS - Ty Law (if he passes his physical)
LB - Kevin Hardy
NT or WR - ??

Very possible we would add Law at FS if he was healthy and wanted to play FS for us.
In my opinion signing Law going into camp equates to Haley trade.

It would put this team over the top. We need a veteran running this Secondary. Lots of youth now on D. Law is just the natural progression at FS.

Will he accept the move? I'm not sure he could.

Hardy is not needed. I think we are all set at DT.
Might see a vet WR/PR signed.

I think signing someone like Hardy would be a good idea. It would make it easier for Ware and Burnett to transition to the NFL game. The better teams in the league, NE and Philly, rarely throw rookies into the starting lineup. NE had Vince Wilfork, a first round DT, playing behind Keith Traylor last year. Philly had their two starting CBs on the bench of 2 years before they started.

I wouldn't mind Law in here as a FS either, he could definitely teach our CBs a thing or two while he is at it.

Where will Ty Law land?
While no position has seen more high-profile, offseason activity than cornerback, Law, perhaps the game's premier cover man prior to his injury-marred 2004 season, is still without a team. The former Patriots star's marketability has been affected by the ongoing rehabilitation of his surgically repaired left foot. But there are signs that he could still be an in-demand free agent after June 1.

Law recently had a screw removed from the foot he broke on Oct. 31, and he reportedly has started to run and do limited workouts near his Miami home. Law and his agent, Carl Poston, expect offers will start bubbling to the surface once teams see he's healthy again.

From whom? Law has visited Pittsburgh and Kansas City, and both teams remain interested, even with the Chiefs last month trading for Miami veteran cornerback Patrick Surtain. Law has spoken with Jets head coach Herman Edwards about joining the Patriots' AFC East rival, and also is on record saying he would very much like to play for Colts head coach Tony Dungy. There may be the slimmest of shots New England could re-sign Law, who was released in late February before he was scheduled to count $12.5 million against the Patriots' 2005 salary cap.

"There are plenty of teams in need of a player of Ty's caliber,'' Poston told The Boston Globe last week. "There'll be a post-June market. All along we understood we had to be patient and let things play out, and more importantly, allow Ty time to heal the foot. When the foot is healed, Ty becomes an attractive player in the market again.''

With potential suitors having little cap space to handle a major free-agent signing at this point in the offseason, Law is wise not to actively pursue a deal until at least after June 1, when some teams realize a cap savings by cutting high-priced veterans. Even if he can prove he's relatively healthy, Law might have to settle for signing a one-year, incentive-laden deal before he gets back on the field and shows the form that made him a Pro Bowl regular in New England. Another option would be for him to wait until the preseason when a team loses a starting cornerback to injury, giving Law more leverage in any potential contract negotiation.

If we were laying odds, we'd rate the cornerback-needy Jets as the favorites to sign Law, followed by Pittsburgh and Kansas City.

Nors I'm surprised you don't think Hardy would fit into what we want to do. He has 25 lbs on Singleton and ability to play multiple positions. If he could play middle in the 4-3 and as well as OLB. I would think he would be a natural for a 3-4 backer at 6'4" 259 lbs
I had an apartment and I had a neighbor, and whenever he would knock on my wall I knew he wanted me to turn my music down and that made me angry 'cause I like loud music... so when he knocked on the wall, I'd mess with his head. I'd say, "Go around! I cannot open the wall! I dunno if you have a doorknob on your side but over here there's nothin'. It's just flat."

At this point, with the combo of rookies and vets, I would be worried about doing much more to the defense. I just want to stop picking at it. Further, as far as FS, I would prefer to see if Davis or someone else can cut it without adding more salary to an already expensive secondary.

As for LB, not really. Kevin Hardy is OK, but I don't know that he contributes to us.

I would like another NT, such as Traylor, because as of right now, Ferguson is the only 0-technique NT we have. That could stink if he gets injured. I just don't know what WR we take, especially if we only plan on carrying about 5 into the season...

You can forget Ty Law. He hasn't seemed to willing to ease up THAT MUCH on his demands and you know the Postons aren't going to.

Certainly not going to come to Dallas, Tuna or not, to take free safety money. Forget being willing to slide over from corner. We would be asking this man to come in and accept a role that pays him less than the other three starters. Substantially less.

As much as I would love to see that happen, it doesn't seem likely.

I agree except for the signing of another WR... Payton said today that they are very comfortable with the WR corp they have now... of course... depending on who becomes available and injuries, you never know...

Minor correction: The Postons were not Jackson's agent.

But I agree with the premise of the post.

True... but at the time of the draft he was talking to the Postons... I think that certainly factored in to our decision...

For some reason I agree with you that adding Law to this team would equate with us adding Haley in '92 - it simply would put us over the top.

However, I'm still unsettled about the DT and WR positions. I don't see Kenyon Coleman making this team, and (on my mock roster) I have only 3 NT's: Glover, Ferguson and Carson. Perhaps we can get by with just 3. I also think we need another good WR via FA.

If we get Law and a vet WR to boot, I can only pray that Bledsoe and the OL hold up because it should be a fine ride straight to the playoffs. I don't care what any prognosticators think - as we sit here in May 2005 the Dallas Cowboys are looking pretty stout across the board!
