Default Which FS would you prefer?

If both were in our radar...

Keep in mind that Chavous may come cheaper than Barber.

Ronde Barber wouldn't make a good FS, IMO. Face it people. CBs and FSs are NOT interchangable. Quit trying to convert every last one.

I agree with you CR. I never consider the option. But since I read another thread where someone mentioned it, I figured I'd ask.

Honestly, I forgot that Barber was a CB. The other thread threw me off. So nevermind this question.

I didnt vote because Barber plays CB and is 5-10 185 pounds.

He is not and cannot play safety.

Very much agreed. And not necessarily just his physique (though it does contribute). He just doesn't have a FS mentality. CBs and FSs have different skill sets. Sure, they share some attributes, but they play different games.

For instance, a CB has a better backpedal and hip movement, more fluidity, etc. He is used to starting at the line and having either a man to play or a small zone.

A FS, on the other hand, plays with more field than anyone on defense. He is watching everything, plays with a huge zone when in zone coverage, and has a much larger cushion in man-man coverage, which he seldom should be asked to do (in a perfect world ;-). He also has a bit more of a mean streak, and good tackling ability. This guy is your last line of defense - he had better be a good tackler.

Now I am a Keith Davis homer, and he is only about 10-12 lbs heavier than Rhonde. But he is built with more stockiness and his tackling ability is far from suspect. However, he also has, I think, the coverage skills to rome the defensive backfield and good instinct. I don't know that Rhonde can do this (in fact, I am fairly certain that would be contrary to his game).

FS required more overall knowledge of the game, CB requires more atheltic ability. FS needs to have a better football sense, and this can overcome a lack of physical attributes, while you wont find alot of slow corners who see the field well. At CB, you gotta be able to move, period, safeties can get away with it. Then again, a safety can't get away with being incompetent, a CB can shut a guy down without knowing too much about what's going on.

Chavous...and it even isn't close when it comes to playing FS. Since we passed on Hall, keep Shulters in mind, he could be our FS after June 1.

Lance Shulters.

Barber is not a FS, and Corey Chavous is ungodly overrated by most on this board. Corey Chavous is not being released reluctantly due to cap reason, he's being released because he sucked so bad last year the Vikings had to go out and shell out big dollars for an upgrade. If Corey Chavous were any good the Vikings would not have paid a 29 year old, couple of steps slower than his prime Darren Sharper a $6 million dollar bonus.

80 tackles, 1 INT and 5 PD. chavous easily outperformed the injured schulters last season.

so chavous is one year older. you look at their careers. they are essentially the same player. show me the big difference (outside of schulters missing a ton of games last season).

Neither will be a Cowboy.

This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

Some are and some aren't. Chavous and Barber would be great though.
Did you know there are only 5000 Snow Leopards in the wild now and they are confined to Central Asia? However, the effective global population (those likely to reproduce) is less than half that number.

I choose Brock Marion. Even at 35 he is way better than either Barber or Chavous at FS.

My hope is that we stop screwing around with scrubs like Hall or Robinson and either sign Marion (if we've just got to have a veteran) or just go with Keith Davis.

In reality, we won't use a FS much anyway with 3 solid CBs on the roster in Newman, Henry, and Glenn so it won't kill us to let Davis (or even Beirault) learn the ropes this season.
Captain Nathan Brittles: "Only the man who commands can be blamed. It rests on me... mission failure!"

"Jerry Jones is a billionaire fan who bought his own team for the express purpose of buying his way into the game. He wants to hang out with the players, stand in front of the cameras, be the face of the team (yech), make personnel moves as if this were a video game, and more than anything else, be seen as the guy who made it all happen."

I could be wrong, but didn't Chavous start out as a CB ?
Be excellent to each other....
