Romo secures new deal; Cowboys look for safety
By Clarence E. Hill Jr.
Star-Telegram Staff Writer
IRVING - The wait for quarterback Tony Romo apparently was well worth it.
Romo, who had been the Cowboys' last remaining unsigned exclusive rights free agent, signed a two-year deal Friday.
Romo was given a $300,00 signing bonus and will receive a $20,000 roster bonus next week. His base salary will be $380,000 in 2005 and $900,000 in 2006. Romo, who is entering his third season with the Cowboys after making the team as a rookie free agent in 2003, is due to receive a reporting bonus of $280,000 at the start of training camp in 2006.
[View Full Quote]Although Romo will likely serve as the third quarterback behind Drew Bledsoe and Drew Henson next season, the financial commitment is proof that the Cowboys think Romo at least has a future as a No. 2 man. The deal protects them from losing Romo next season when he will be a restricted free agent. If he does not develop, the Cowboys could cut him before training camp and avoid paying the roughly $1.18 million they would owe him in 2006.
Receiver Randal Williams received a two-year deal under a similar scenario when he was an exclusive-rights free agent last season. He was released last month after a disappointing performance in 2004.

This was a piece of an article posted earlier by CBZ-40. I know that there is another post about Romo being resigned and everyone believes that this is bad news for Henson.
I actually believe that it is good news for Henson. When Bledsoe was signed, Spags wrote that we could tell what JJ and Bill thought of Henson's future by the amount of signing bonus that Bledsoe received. Large bonus = bad news and a small bonus = good news for Henson. Well Bledsoe got squat for a signing bonus. And now Romo gets signed to a contract that pays him #2 QB money in 2006. That IMO means that Bledsoe will basically have a one year deal with the Cowboys.
Henson is already penciled in as the starter for 2006 with Romo as backup.

The Eatman article about the Romo sighting on Dallascowboys.com mentioned that this is the same thing they did with Randal Williams last offseason. Williams was cut and is no longer with the team.
I wouldn't read too much into the Romo signing. Just looks like a smart business move to get not have to worry about losing Romo later without compensation.

Ditto that.
I expect it to be Henson but it would not surprise me or bother me if it turned out to be Romo. I think their competition is actually pretty close; a lot closer than most people will credit. It's not like Romo came in with no credentials; he was the #1 rated passer and the "Player of the Year" in his college division as a senior. He could very easily have been drafted in the 3rd or 4th round and no one would have blinked at the pick; in fact the Cowboys were considering it in the 4th. Of course they decided to go with someone else who is no longer even here but were completely surprised that they were still able to get Romo as UDFA. The fact that he fell out of the draft and we were able to sign him was just great fortune on our part.

If the Cowboys FO deems Romo worthy of keeping after this year they will give him an extension during the '06 season to which he is already signed and keep him out of the FA market. If they don't think he is worth of it they can cut him without a significant cap hit ($150k is nothing) next year. But if they like what he does this year they can keep him next year and then sew him up long term.

I could be wrong.......but I see the signing as a sign of Parcells having more confidence in our young QBs than maybe some of us surmised.
I would be very surprised if we see another vet QB brought into TC.

I think it has a LOT to do with how the season goes.... they didn't bring him in here to be a 1 year stopgap.... If he produces, there will be a year 2 I'm sure.
"They say it makes your testicles shrink,'' Bonds said. "I can tell you my testicles are the same size. They haven't shrunk. They're the same and work just the same as they always have."

I don't know about that. I was thinking the same Michael, but Bledsoe said in his interview, and I quote
"Hopefully, in a few years things will be looking good and we won’t be hearing many boos. It will be fun."
I found that interesting when I read the post and am very curious as to what that means. Could be several scenearios to it I guess.
AS: Cowboys ice their own kicker in 19-13 OT loss
“That is one of the luxuries of my position as owner as well as the ultimate decision maker, general manager and president – I can do that and take the losses and come back for more,” Jones said.
God help us...............

I agree, I doubt a vet gets brought to camp this year.
