Default Safety Update

Safety Update

Dallas will likely have more veteran options to contemplate when June 1st rolls around. The Sporting News is reporting that Pittsburgh Steelers FS Mike Logan will likely be cut next week. Logan’s play has been described as “athletic but not heady” which does not sound like a good fit for the quarterback of a Bill Parcells secondary. The fact that Logan lost his starting job last year could also factor in the Cowboys’ thinking should Logan actually hit the market.

A more tantalizing option would be Vikings SS Corey Chavous. The former Vanderbilt standout is avoiding offseason workouts with Minnesota because of a contract dispute. The fact that he’s in the last year of his contract, and that Minnesota has a young SS they like in Willie Offord could make Chavous expendable.

Why might the Cowboys covet a strong safety, when Roy Williams is on the roster? Consider Chavous’ profile in Pro Football Weekly’s 2004 preview, which rated him the seventh best safely in the league.

Cerebral defensive back and student of the game made smooth transition from cornerback to strong safety but is still out of position. Chavous would be a superstar at free safety, but Minnesota didn’t move him to the FS spot due to Brian Russell’s production at that position.

I have found mention of a chronic knee problem, but Chavous has missed only three games in his seven-year career. Minnesota spent a small fortune signing Darren Sharper to play FS, so Chavous won’t be moving there soon — at least not in a Vikings uniform.

Man he sounds sweet as a player, him being a former corner is also desirable, the only problem being the contract despute, thats not Something BP will likely deal with, But Chavous and Williams in the same secondary, (i'm salivating)

Wasn't it originally reported he was holding out of camp because the Vikes had hinted they might release him June 1st and not because the SS you listed but because they drafted Fox out of Ohio State. Well I hope they release him next Wed. and we sign him on thursday.....

Chavous' agent is Eugene Parker. Parker is also the agent for Hines Ward among others........

While most top agents are based in a major city -- generally on one coast or the other -- Parker works out of tiny Roanoke, Ind. He specializes in NFL players and has more than 40 clients, including Emmitt Smith, Ray Lewis, Curtis Martin and Rod Woodson. According to Woodson, players trust the deeply religious Parker because of his values.

In my opinion it's either Chavous or nothing. All the other candidates are not impressive.

I agree, either Chavous or go with what we have. If he is released on June 1 as expected, it won't take very long to get him into town. He would be the final piece to what could be a dominating defense this year. Even without him, this defense is still head and shoulders above the crew we fielded last year.

I guess the 3rd degree burns from The Rocket have healed after he and the Cardinals left Texas Stadium in '99. He's definitely better suited at safety as opposed to cornerback. I think he would do a very good job for us - if we can get him signed without breaking the bank.

Fox will be competing at FS not SS.

Chavous in Dallas is a match made in heaven. Old enough to be a leader yet young enough to still have a few great years left. Played CB, FS and SS. Smart and tough.

Git r dun, BP!
