Parcells still hopes Morgan's a catch

IRVING – The Cowboys passed on taking a receiver in last month’s draft, which had a lot to do with the team’s deficiencies on defense.
But coach Bill Parcells' hope that third receiver Quincy Morgan is ready to make an impact was another factor.
Morgan, who came over to the Cowboys in last season’s trade for troubled receiver Antonio Bryant, wants to show the consistency that has eluded him his first four seasons in the league. On the third day of minicamp Sunday, Parcells talked about Morgan’s progress.
“He really did a good job of getting into our off-season program here,” Parcells said. “He did a good job of improving his strength and his body type a little bit, and I think it is showing up on the field here.”
Parcells has insisted that receivers such as Morgan, Terry Glenn and Terrance Copper have the speed to make plays downfield. The problem for Morgan has been catching the ball.
The Cowboys identified a flaw in the way he positions his hands when making catches. They hope that by making sure he puts the correct hand on top, he won’t have as many drops.
“He’s pretty tough,” Parcells said of the Garland, Texas, native. “I kind of like the kid. I really do."
Best collision of Sunday: Free-agent rookie receiver Jamaica Rector, a Celeste, Texas, native, was looking for the ball when safety Roy Williams cut in front of him to pick off a Drew Bledsoe pass. In the process, Williams accidentally decked the 5-10, 189-pound Rector.
Rector returned to the huddle. Williams appeared to be shaken up for a few moments.
Best fight of minicamp: In Sunday’s afternoon practice, players rushed to the scene of an altercation during team drills. Left tackle Flozell Adams had to be separated from rookie free-agent defensive tackle Thomas Johnson.
Parcells spoke to Adams a few minutes later but didn’t appear to be upset.
Parcells: Romo slightly ahead of Henson
Though it’s way too early to call, Parcells said third-year quarterback Tony Romo has a “slight” advantage over Drew Henson when it comes to knowing the Cowboys system.
Romo, who received a two-year contract worth nearly $2 million this off-season, and Henson will compete for the backup job behind Bledsoe.
“I think it’s going to play itself out this summer,” Parcells said. “I really do. That’s gonna be one of the easier things to decide because we’re going to give them so many reps.”
Henson played the first half of last season’s Thanksgiving game against the Bears. Romo hasn't taken a snap in a regular-season game.
