Well, just note, who's in the center...They ALWAYS put the best looking person in the center of these shots.
As far as hijacking the thread, it would only have been a matter of time before me and Winicki got around to it.

I have told many people that story as soon as the Walker trade was made and a few years after we got Emmitt.

I remember a crisp Sunday afternoon when Danny White was manning the con for Your Dallas Cowboys and Mike Renfro was a wide receiver of same.
Mike ran this nifty out pattern. About 7 or 8 yards and a quick right hand turn, and ole Danny would deliver the ball on cue. Almost made you think they practiced this at some point.
Well that day the Dallas team was facing the Cardinals of St. Louis. This would be the stop they made right after Chicago and before Arizona.
Pretty soon, after several attempts that yielded positive yards, the cornerback for the Cardinals started inching up on that play. He was ready, willing, and able to snatch that ball from an unsuspecting White/Renfro and haul it the other way for points.
However...
The next time Renfro ran the out, he added a slightly different wrinkle. He broke to the sidelines, as he was want to do from time to time, and then turned up field.
The cornerback was in position to scoop up the out, but the ball wasn't there. It was in mid-flight with just enough arch to meet with Mr. Renfro at a preordained spot about 8 yards behind the cornerback.
Needless to say the White to Renfro pass produced six points and Dallas went on to win that game.
Of course this wasn't as famous a toss as Tinker to Evers to Chance. Which is a story that old guy who started this mess will have to relate.
But it was pert near perfect for an October afternoon, many moons ago.

That was a nice trade, but the greatest trade in Cowboys history will always be the one where Clint Murchison traded the rights to "Hail to the Redskins" to George Preston Marshall and the Redskins in exchange for Marshall's approval in getting a NFL franchise in Dallas. That paved the way for all the Superbowl wins.
There are many links to this wonderful story and it has been shared on this and other sites many times. Here it is yet again plus some other good stories:

So maybe we can look at it as: B Johnson to Houston in return getting: Mike Renfro, H Walker, E Smith, R Maryland, K Smith, etc........................................and of course, 3 SB wins.
sorry dude, as usual people waaaaay overstate what we got in the Walker trade. I hear over and over that we got Emmit and Russell, etc. I dont have a chart nor all the details as I write this but here's one point for example. We did not use a pick we got from Minnesota to get Emmit. We used that pick plus one other top pick of our own to move up to get Emmit. Big difference. I'm pretty sure at least one other of the players always credit as us having gotten with a Minny pick was the same thing.

The Walker trade got us a number of players that helped us win 3 SB's.
No other single trade made as much difference as that one.
Therefore it is the greatest trade of the Franchise.

Post of the month Tio.

Did you know there are only 5000 Snow Leopards in the wild now and they are confined to Central Asia? However, the effective global population (those likely to reproduce) is less than half that number.

Yep, the years roll by, and I'm getting a bit long of tooth, yet not nearly as old as CBz40.
So gather 'round my chid'ren, and let ole jack tell the story of 'The Greatest Trade Ever Made'.
Of course the trade that comes to most minds is the Walker dealing to Minnesota. I'm sorry, that's not what I'm speaking of. You will find that in another thread, 'The Greatest Screwing of All Time'. Nope, there was a far more significant trade in Dallas history, one that stretches the domino effect across 2 decades.
[View Full Quote]Once upon a time, our beloved Cowboys traded a player we all greatly appreciated, Butch johnson, to the Houston Oilers. Some of you will note that Butch never played for houston, but was traded to Denver. No. Butch had some issues with Oiler management, and after a couple of summer practices, was given his release, where he then was signed by the Broncos.
You may say, 'Dang jack, what was so special about that?' Simmer down, move closer so to hear my every word.
In return the Oilers sent us another greatly appreciated player, Mike Renfro. Renfro did a fine job for our 'Boys, dependable sure handed sort. But certainly not the stuff that would make this the greatest trade. Not at all. It was the extra consideration that the Oilers sent, a 5th round draft pick, that made this so special.
It was that 5th round draft pick being subsequently used to draft one Herschel Walker. And I'm quite certain we all know how that turned out.
So maybe we can look at it as: B Johnson to Houston in return getting: Mike Renfro, H Walker, E Smith, R Maryland, K Smith, etc........................................and of course, 3 SB wins.
Sleep tigh little ones.

GREAT POST...I love these types of posts, Also liked TD3's post as well.
I would encourage you to make a thread about this in the History Zone...I thought about moving the thread but the funny Reality's Angels pics took away from your post.

So was the third round pick Dallas used on Butch Johnson in 1976 the greatest draft pick in Cowboys history?

I thought Renfro was a very good player for Dallas, when healthy. He burned the Redskins and the Giants on similar plays in 1985. He and White had the timing down on that out pattern.

When you look at the trades, any trades, you have to consider that trade on its own. Sure the Johnson to houston for renfro and 5th pick was nice, maybe, I dont even remember it. But the Walker trade is the trade that made history. Similar to the NO trade made to get the rights to pick Williams. that trade too also deserves special merit due to the idiocy of the whole thing. Like that trade, Walker to Minn was a colosal blunder by the vikes, that contributed prolly 80-90%to the collective RISE of the cowboys into NFC powerhouse.
Credit Jimmy and Jerry for being smart enough to envision such a trade, being prompt enough to act and carry it out. But to say a trade before hand for a 5th rounder set it up is bigger then "the trade" itself is ludicrous. We would have found another pick worthy of inclusion into this trade to make it happen. It might not have happened exactly like it did, But it would have still happened and still been the biggest trade player and pick wise of all time, and still a colosal blunder on minn part.
No sir, The Trade is the biggest trade in Cowboys history and the other then trading the bambino to the yankees, may be the all time stupidest trades of all time.
Step aside for the Cowboys from Hell!!!!!

I agree, that 1 trade turned a struggling Dallas team into a powerhouse of the 90's. Hands down the Walker trade was one of the most lopsided and biggest trades in sports, not just football.

True - I stand corrected - the above trade was very important to the history that would become Cowboys legend. Walker second.
Step aside for the Cowboys from Hell!!!!!
