Bryant staying away from Cowboys

WR's mom says he's in Miami; team hasn't addressed incident

08:42 PM CDT on Thursday, June 10, 2004

By JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING – Cowboys receiver Antonio Bryant, who did not practice Thursday and is not expected to practice today, is in Miami, his mother said.

Bryant has missed three consecutive practices after being escorted out of practice by club security Tuesday after an altercation with coach Bill Parcells that ended with the three-year veteran balling up a jersey and hitting the coach in the face with it.

"I talked to Antonio for an hour last night," Irene Bryant said. "I told him that respect has to be given before it is received. I'm hoping and praying for the best."

While Bryant's agent, Peter Schaffer, maintains his client will not be traded or released, the Cowboys have not addressed the issue.

Club spokesman Rich Dalrymple said Parcells and owner Jerry Jones were unavailable for comment.

Bryant could not be reached for comment.

So, if he's in Miami, it makes me wonder if he was told to take some time off and get away from the team until he gets his head on straight and then to come back or something.

Bottom line... you are a first round talent... but the NFL has issues with your behavior... so it costs you money in the draft...

You get taken higher than you should have because you are basically a psycho...

You get a chance to be coached by one of the greatest in NFL history...

You disrespect him and your team because you can't get over your issues...

Boys... as much as he has bulked up... let's face it... he is on the 'roids... by disrespecting BP he has pretty much nailed his coffin shut... what a pud... his behavior has indicated as much...

No self-respecting player displays this behavior without being a total nut or being on the 'roids...

I had high hopes for him... but he is hopeless...

He had problems at Pitt with authority so I am not willing to conclude he's on 'roids.

Fact is though, he's made a big mistake here and his past with BP is not picture perfect.

I disagree that he is 'hopeless' but this cat has used up 8 lives for sure.

LOL tell us how you really feel. While it appears he is as bad as you describe, he will probably still be around by camp time.

This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

While I don't necessarily disagree with what you said, I do disagree with the steroids issue.

If I remember correctly, he only gained 10 pounds of muscle, but he looks ripped. He could easily gain that in the off-season by working out and eating right.

He probably worked out harder in this past off-season than he ever has and feels that all the work was in vain to be put at #3 again. Not excusing it, just wondering if this was the case.

It does seem kinda ridiculous that he did this prior to training camp though.

I have a feeling that Parcells loves the attitude.....his competitive attitude that is. But to be reportedly "shown up" in front of everybody else.....that's where he draws the line I'll bet.

My contention relies with strictly circumstantial evidence... but it seems to ring true...

He has held himself in check prior to this week for the most part...

We all know he is a nut... but BP liked him.... regardless of how it turns out... it was a nice pick potential-wise...

In the context of a "voluntary" camp he manged to basically challenge a "hall of fame coach" to a fight... nice work AB...

no big deal...Spree choked his coach, and he's still an all-star player in the NBA who has had no trouble at all since then.

he had behavioral issues when he was in college as well...if he is on roids cause he bulked up, then I guess T. Newman is on the juice as well.
