Cowboys' seventh-round pick agrees to deal
01:09 AM CDT on Monday, July 26, 2004
From Staff Reports
The Cowboys reached a contract agreement with their first draft pick Sunday when cornerback Nate Jones came to terms on a three-year contract.
Jones will receive a signing bonus of $41,500 and base salaries of $230,000, $305,000 and $385,000. The Cowboys hope seventh-round picks Patrick Crayton and Jacques Reeves will sign as soon as today.
Jones will compete for a backup cornerback spot, but he excelled at Rutgers as a kick returner, averaging 25.7 yards per return for his career. Defensively, he had 73 tackles and two interceptions as a senior.

Wow...I've been teaching in the 2nd largest school district in VA at the same school for 23 years, with my master's degree...I'm the head of my English department and just got a prorated month added to my salary for taking on summer standards of learning test responsibilities (which means I just got an unprecedented 10,000 dollar raise which means I'm earning more than I'd be earning with 30 years of teaching experience, and yet....
It would take me 5 years at my current salary to earn what this 7th round selection will make this year alone between his salary and signing bonus...and he's a 7th round draft pick....lmao.
I'm not complaining...I love my job...I just find it interesting...yes, they sacrifice their bodies, but even the bench warmers will make my lifetime earnings and still retire young enough to put another 25-30 years into another career.
Damn the genes that gave me a light and thin lower body...

My Mom was an English professor at a university in Maryland for about 30 years (with tenure), and I agree that educators in the U.S. are grossly underpaid. And then they wonder why more people don't go into the profession . . . . Go figure!

It is sad....that america puts more money in the pocket of a 7th round player who, by most odds, probably will not be in the league in the next few years....then it does those who teach and educate americas youth.
Sad indeed.

Look what actors get paid, the entertainment business no doubt is where the big bucks are and while I do not get upset with how much they make (They do give up privacy) I clearly do not want to hear them batch and complain or try to compare themselves to the average working American.

Wayne - First off...teaching is one of the most novel jobs anyone could have. I appreciate the work you do. My wife and father are teachers as well. My father just retired after 40 years teaching and he is getting 80% monthly salary that he was getting in his final years...not to mention his health insurance rates going up. It's nice to see others that do what they do because they love to teach others and not for the cash.
Keep up the good work!

First of all I think you have a very honorable job. Many in the teaching profession choose to do it even when they could be paid more somewhere else. My father taught highschool in a very inner city type environment for 10 years, so I know of the dedication it takes.
But... You should understand that teachers get paid nicely for what they do. The per/hour rate is quite nice. And it's a great job when your children are in school. You get summers off to spend with them. In other words not all teachers have given up a thing to be one. They choose to do it because of the benefits.
So now we get to the money paid to entertainers/athletes. It's all about supply and demand. You end up paying the football players money when you watch their games. You pay actors money when you watch their movies. The moment you stop watching is the moment they stop getting paid. They money they get paid is an equilibrium point of the market. The only way for you to follow through with a complaint is to adjust the market forces. In other words stop watching tv/movies/sports.
The General

Ummmm yeah.....you stand in front of a bunch of pimply-faced pubescent teenyboppers pointing a stick at a chalkboard and talking.
The seventh rounder works year round at a physical pace that rivals that of a Marine, then steps on the field every single day hoping not to hit somebody just right and end up paralyzed for life or dead. If he DOESN'T "make it", he's considered a failure and goes back to the hood to flip burgers. Then if he DOES happen to "make it", he spends his life hobbling around on arthritic joints in constant pain.
Hey...... teacher....... leave them kids alone!!

Well that Marine is not making that kind of money. As I said I don't care what these guys get paid but I do get aggervated listening to some of them batch about money when they are being paid very well to begin with.
