JJT | Bryant, Parcells meet; Whalen waived
Bryant, Parcells meet; Whalen waived
12:15 PM CDT on Monday, July 26, 2004
By JEAN-JACQUES-TAYLOR / The Dallas Morning News
IRVING -- Cowboys wide receiver Antonio Bryant and coach Bill Parcells met Monday morning at Valley Ranch.
Parcells arrived at 8 a.m. at the team's Valley Ranch training facility. Bryant arrived at 9 a.m.
There was no immediate word on what the coach and player discussed.
During on-field work last month, Bryant threw a jersey at Parcells after an altercation that included wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson and wide receivers coach Todd Haley. Bryant resumed working out in Dallas a few weeks ago but not at the team's facility.
The Cowboys have delayed making a decision on Bryant because they did not want emotion to play a part. A few teams have called about trading for Bryant, but the Cowboys would want a significant draft pick in return. Though headstrong, Bryant does possess talent, and the team's wide receiving group is not very deep.
Five days before the team's first training camp practice in California, the Cowboys waived backup tight end James Whalen, who was injured most of last season and did not catch a pass in seven games.
The Cowboys are well-stocked at tight end with Jason Witten, Dan Campbell and rookie Sean Ryan.
In four seasons with Dallas, Whalen caught 17 passes for 152 yards -- all during the 2002 season. He did not score a touchdown.
The Cowboys open training camp Friday in Oxnard, Calif. The first practice is Saturday.

Don't forget Landon Trusty at TE. Probably a practice candidate at best, but he is in the mix.

Kind of shocked about Whalen. He's been a great special teams player.

Cowboys did him a favor
Gives him a full training camp somewhere else versus getting cut right before season starts.
Notice Chad not cut yet? hmmmm

What do you think that means Nors? That we have a fish on the hook willing to give us a late round pick for him?

Yeah, I wonder where Trusty fits in. I liked his frame on those pictures about a month ago. You are probably right he is probably a practice squad player. I am just pumped that every preseason game will be televised. It will give us out of towners more things to talk about over the next month.

My boy Whalen wasn't even worthy of going to camp?
What if an injury hits the position?
Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano must like Landon Trusty a lot to let one of the best special teams players on the roster loose at this early date.
It does give Whalen more time to audition for new clubs, but I believe it would've been in Dallas' best interests to carry him through camp as insurance.

He's going to Miami as a RB/QB.
He's a hybrid.

I thought Whalen should have lost some weight and become a posseion WR. He has great hands and runs precise routes.
Be excellent to each other....

I think Bill is bringing Chad to camp for two reasons:
1) Have AB throw his jersey at Chad
or
2) run slant patterns with RW playing safety.

The off season goings-on, especially the Bryant situation and the George signing, seem to have allowed the focus to stay off Drew Henson.
It will probably be to his benefit to be able to acclimate to the NFL under these conditions instead of being under the microscope as the biggest Cowboy's story of the off season.

LOL....Chad can say "What's my Role" and AB can throw the jersey in his face.
