It was a great defense against the run.
I remember each and every Sunday when Summerall and Brookshire/Madden would talk about the flex defense. Man those were some great games back then. All you old timers like me will never forget that era.

This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

Very true BDC...

Don't get me wrong, the early--middle 90's were an amazing time to be a Cowboy's fan. Who would have thought the team would have rebounded from the depths of the late 80's that quickly. Especially with all the critisism hurled at Jerry Jones. But the period from the late 60's on.... WOW!

Now, I didn't really start following the team until the early 70's. But 20 straight winning seasons---20. Every year sans '74 they were a contender.

And yeah, most fans here talk about the '93 team being the greatest Cowboy team of all... no-way. 1977 takes top honors. First in defense in the NFL. First in offense in the NFL.

The "Flex", the offensive lineman "Shift", the cheerleaders. Nothing could compare with being a Cowboy's fan in that era... nothing.
